Stranded in China - Lot's of Photos, Mine and Others

I can’t even leave now if I wanted

The list of countries that will not allow anyone who has been in China for the past 14 days is allowed to enter.

Not everyone in China is in the same situation as I find myself in now. Dalian has been quite lucky with such a low count of people who contracted the Coronavirus. Very few deaths as well, and usually older people and those who already have other illnesses are dying, sadly. Last I heard it has been over 26 days since a case been reported here. That’s good news.

Do bare in mind coronavirus is in the air and can get into your eyes of you are near someone who sneezes or coughs in your face.

The bad news for many in this city is that still many buildings and neighbourhoods have been quarantined. Some people aren’t even allowed to leave their home for 2 weeks or longer. Some people coming back from travel weren’t allowed into their homes. They need to have everything delivered, groceries and whatever they need. They might be allowed outside for a few minutes to walk their dogs but cannot come in contact with other people. Luckily for me, my building has free movement still. I can come and go as I please but here’s the catch, there is nowhere for me to go other than buy groceries or McDonald’s. Yes, sadly the only restaurant open near my home is McDonald’s and a dumpling shop. The dumpling shop doesn’t let you inside, you have to wait outside. All the other restaurants are closed until further notice. Just like schools, and my job as a teacher many things are not open for business. However, corporations are open and other types of businesses that are not social functions such as bars, clubs, hobby type places like rock climbing or swimming; (I apologize for the run-on sentence).

Streets and neighbourhoods under quarantine are blocked off.

(This an outdoor seafood market near my home)

(Entire blocks near my home are are off limits.)

I stay home all day every day simply because there is nowhere for me to go. Friends don’t want to meet too much, and if they did where could they meet? At people's homes, I suppose but there’s the risk of bringing the virus into your home. I live alone, my girlfriend like so many other Chinese people left Wuhan to go see her family for the holiday when this all broke out. I have two cats, they are ok but I miss human contact. My friends and family have all offered video chats at any time but it’s just not the same.

(It seems extreme this work canteen, but better to be safe than kill your grandma or elderly neighbour)

And the ability to leave China has become almost impossible. Most countries won’t allow anyone who has been in China for the past 14 days to enter. I can’t leave anyway, have two cats and no one will take care of them for such a long time until I can return. And taking them with me when I was able to leave was too difficult. I’ve traveled with them before and they got incredibly sick due to the nature of how pets travel to other cities in China.

But many cities in China are gearing up to reopen. And many other places in this world, are sitting by not worried about this. After you probably won't die but you might help grandparents, or the sweet old lady next door die.

I don’t even know which day of the week it is unless I look at the calendar. I just have nothing to do each day but just live. I feel like a pet; eat sleep, repeat, and do what you can to wake up tomorrow.

Stay Safe If Not For You, Do it For Someone Else

That's why I tell my wife to wear glasses instead of contacts.
Not the best protection but still better than contact lens.

Glad to hear you are doing alright. The Coronavirus has just arrived with it's first cases where I live in Tennessee. From your pictures I can't imagine it being so extreme here but it might get that way. It's like an alternate universe seeing your empty streets.

A local husband and his wife were on a cruise ship that had a lot of infected people and were quarantined in Japan. People here are very hateful towards them now and fearful they brought the virus even though they were quarantined 28 days and were cleared. Fear makes people mean and I don't like seeing that mentality. From what I've read China really handled things well. I don't know if the US can do what China did.

Here some colleges are closing and turning to online courses for the remainder of the semester. Concerts and big events are cancelled. There's absolutely no toilet paper or cleaning products to be found in stores from people panic buying but there is plenty of food. I knew a month ago to prepare for social isolation once it hit the US so my husband and I are ready to hunker down and not go anywhere if the time comes. Hopefully things for you will resume as normal.

Well has a very submissive society. There is no way it could go like this in North America. Aside from being bored and lonely at home all the time I am glad to here rather then there. Coronavirus only has less than 3% death rate so it's minimal compared to other viruses which kill more people. It's just so easy to pass to another person. Rates could also be much higher than what is reported. H12N1 killed 300,000 people and the US gov kept it a secret for 10 years. History could repeat its self.

No shortages of food here and we've got mountains of toilet paper, dirt cheap too. Lot's of food but haven't seen bacon cheese in the shops near my home in a while.

It really suck about the couple who got cleared of the virus but are being treated with hate.

Do be careful when you come home from shopping. Wash everything you bring into your home. The virus can live on surfaces for up to 9 days. I wash everything, even my keys and phone, every item I bring inside, cans, jars, plastic bags. I isolate my shoes and jacket too. It's quite the routine and a pain in the butt.

You doing alright?

I hope you’re doing better. I’m sheltering solo too but I don’t even go out grocery shopping. Fortunately, there are services here where someone does it for you. At least you and the cats have each other. I don’t have any pets but I have my patio garden and that makes me happy. I hope the world feels safer sooner than later.
