All Is Lost (2013)

One man and his yacht against the formidable ocean and its unforgiving nature. It's not a new story or genre that's a given but what this film lacks in plot originality it makes up for in artistic talent.

If you're looking to watch an old bloke struggle at sea while barely saying a word then this is the film for you.

All Is Lost has a steady pace throughout while also packing a punch in terms of action. Robert Redford does well to look miserable and sick of his life throughout the whole film which really adds to the stress of the title.

The main flaw I found was that we don't get to find out much about our character. This may be a turn off for some but I don't feel like it dampens the film too much. Probably because it's already soaked with Redfords charm.

Definitely not the type of film that'll set off fireworks in your synapses but it's perfect for a lazy day when you just want to kick back and melt into the sofa.

Budget: $8.5M
Box Office: $13.6M
Rotten Tomatoes: Tomatometer 94% - Audience 63%

Agreed, this is the kinda lazy day movie I would watch kinda like Frank. I recently watched Palmer which is kinda like that also. This sounds a bit like a feel-good movie.

Not too sure about feel-good, it's mildly depressing in all honesty lol. Just that usual survival style movie with the usual elements but it wad directed pretty well overall.

I saw that film.

I liked it...for some reason, I love a stuck-in-a-lifeboat-and-must-figure-out-how-to-survive stories. I've read a bunch of these, not by choice per se, but because they somehow stumble my way: Moby Dick, In the Heart of the Sea (non-fiction Moby Dick), Shackleton's story, Unbroken, Life of Pi, I feel like I'm forgetting some.

I didn't like it...even when "all is lost", all is not lost. I suppose that comes from my Christian faith, but I found the film too hopeless. Even when all seems lost, there is still hope.

I am the same. I enjoy any kind of survival based story that is done well. Not sure what it is, someone is bound to have some psychological explanation behind it.

To be honest, I kind of wanted the end of All Is Lost to just fade out to black at the end. Not many movies go down the route of an unhappy ending but I think it could have really worked with this one. That sense of after all of that and salvation being so close, it just wasn't enough. That gets you right in the feels. Probably wouldn't have turned a profit though with a depressing ending lol.
