I discovered Steemit thanks to a dear friend's recommendation. He doesn't have an account but he thought I'd like it, and he was absolutely right.
I have always wanted a place to share my thoughts and works where I wouldn't be attacked. I see it everyday in Facebook, in Instagram, in Tumblr. There's so much hate and the atmosphere is so hostile that I used to prefer to just hide in my shell. However, things in Steemit are different. I have received some of the kindest comments of my life being here and most people have been extremely welcoming. I have found amazing content that makes me happy to read and see everyday. The conections I have made with some people are pure and real and I have learned a great deal. Here, you win in so many ways and that's what makes Steemit the incredible place that it is.
I have little more than a month here so I still have a long way to go, but day by day I keep growing thanks to many helping hands. I participated in contests (I won a couple), I joined Discord chats (and met awesome communities), I created posts that I enjoyed a lot. This month was wonderful and I'm super excited for what is yet to come.
Also, yes, I made some SBD's that have helped me to cover some expenses so my mom doesn't have to struggle to pay for my studies. It may not look like much, but in my country the monthly minimun wage is 3$, so with one post I can make more than my parents in a month. Steemit is making my life (and my family's) easier and I'm nothing but grateful for all I have achieved.
I have a similar experience. I like to write, and wanted a place that would be more socially involved, as well as a possible way to earn a little extra. In the meantime, I've had the privilege of meeting so many cool people, and learning about cryptocurrency and the blockchain. This has been an amazing ride, and immensely rewarding for me.
