Road Trip, Day 6: Fryers Cove
We were still on day 6 and more wine tasting had to be done. In this case we visited Fryers Cove which is a local cellar, that has entered into a community project with a restaurant, named the Jetty Restaurant. The wine cellar owns 30% of the restaurant and the remaining 70% is owned by the community.
The restaurant is built, behind a still working fish factory, where they grow abalone!!
The restaurant has a wine tasting room where all the Fryers Cove Wines can be tasted and bought.
It is a very nice , but industrial looking setting, where one is sitting right next to the sea.
On the first photo you can see the entrance to the restaurant, which is basically through the entrance of the fish factory. The workers are harvesting bamboo for the abalone, right next to the jetty.
For some reason (I was actually not feeling well), I did not take any photos of the wine tasting and the food we ate at Fryers Cove. My wife however loved the wines and we also bought some to take home!!
The link below on the abalone shows the setting very nicely. South Africa is now the largest abalone producer outside Asia. This factory grow abalone and is also 65% community owned
Doring Bay Abalone

I love it where big business helps and invests in the community, particularly in these very small communities in remote places in South Africa.
I hope you enjoyed the post and that you have a wonderful day.
Always nice to read about successful community projects, bringing life back to a region where working together problems can be overcome.
