I was asked...

  • The measures have clearly not worked. Why are we still living under them?

My current answer...

How can the measures work if large amounts of people haven't followed them?

I'm reminded of a podcast that I use to listen to, schoolsucks podcast. In one of his episodes, Brett brought up an interesting topic.

From what I remember from that one episode: Back not so very long ago in history, many more people were dying in the hospitals and elsewhere where people might be bandaging up other people with open wounds. Pregnant women who gave birth had some of the highest mortality rates after they gave birth.

This one "crazy" doctor began to piece some of the puzzle pieces together. You see, he began to wash his hands before doing any type of surgery; he also had his staff do the same; and, as much as I don't agree with the chemical cleaning products (seeing how there are better options), he also kept his hospital clean. Within his hospital, the mortality rate went way down. What did he figure out?

He figured out that bacteria was the culprit, a visible thing under a microscope but invisible to the naked eye. If his way, albeit not in the best way where people would listen to him or hear what he had to say, he began to speak about his "new" discovery and basically told people that if they washed their hands and kept their spaces clean, the mortality rate would go down.

Most people thought he was crazy, insane, a nut that had his head in the clouds; they demanded that he lose his job for something so ludicrous. I mean, the other doctors couldn't see this bacteria with the naked eye so, therefore, it didn't exist -- "End of discussion!" they shouted.

Today, doctors understand that bacteria exist, even though they can't see it, and they now take precautions to limit the exposure to these deadly bacteria (again, I think we both can agree there are better ways to keep something clean). Something as simple as washing your hands can prevent the spread of deadly bacteria.

Simple, right?

But, many people back then didn't take this doctor seriously until so many years later. Many deaths could have been prevented if the other doctors followed his advise much sooner instead of immediately calling him a quack doctor.

This brings me back to this virus. Almost immediately, a large percentage of the public has said this is all bullshit without recognizing that viruses in the past have caused many deaths, either government created or natural ones found in nature. Large amounts of the American public didn't even stop to think about what they could do to stop the spread if it did exist. Instead, they immediately went to -- this is all a hoax -- much like the doctors in the above story. -- Many of the American public are screaming and whining like a five-year-old about a simple mask over the face, something that may stop your spit from coming out of your mouth and being carried by the wind. Something that may prevent people from, if there are other people around, inhaling your spit or whatever else that may come out of the mouth, and catching something that they didn't have previously.

Now, we have had these virus "emergencies" in the past where things haven't add up in the least. Something is very different this time.

I can completely agree that our government isn't the best and that we should trust all that they say because it is far to easy to find where they have done so much wrong it is truly disgusting and pure evil; I'm not saying that there aren't people doing their best to take away freedom from everybody else but themselves; etc. The government has done much destruction and they should be questioned at every turn. That being said, something is different this time. There really seems to be a virus killing off folks or making them very ill.

So, again, if you are wondering why the measures that were recommended months ago haven't worked, why not blame the American public for their inability to wear a mask while in heavily populated public spaces and/or stay at home as directed? (granted, people are wondering how they are going to eat and pay rent. This is a very real issue and the government has, once again, fucked over the American public.)
