Photography Portfolio - Favorite Shots

"Banana Hammock in My Kitchen"

Photography Class

As part of my education, I was required to take two semesters of "Professional Photography & Editing" as part of my coursework. In order to receive the credits for completion of that aspect of my coursework, I had to put together a "Portfolio" with several different types of shots in order to show my proficiency in that type of photography. For this post, I am sharing the shots I used for this assignment and short explanations of why I used them. In the above shot, the point was to "bokeh out" the background, while keeping a high contrast foreground. I like this one a lot, personally.

"Sprinkler"

Stop-Motion

The purpose of this shot was to use the proper shutter speed to capture a stop-motion photograph, how do you think I did?

"Background Blur"

Static Foreground with Morion Background

In this shot, the goal was to keep the car in focus while having the background in motion. I could have done a bit better with this one I think.

"Alley Oop"

Slow Shutter Speed

Here is another "motion" shot, however, in this one, the shutter speed was set so that the subjects are blurred as a result.

"Lansing from On High"

Leading Lines

In this photo, the object was to show an example of the concept of "Leading Lines" in the composition. As you can see, the street "directs" the viewer's eye down the street into the picture...

"Trading Life for Money"

Focal Point with Leading Lines

Some of these will be self-explanatory. In this one, I did set the shutter speed to catch blur from the man, but it is hard to see as he is so far away, if only my lenses were better!

"Ectoplasm Street Light"

Mixed Composition

In this photo, I used several elements to create one of my favorite shots. The green in the light reflecting on the wall, with the angled lines leading the eye upward further are what makes this photo appealing to me.

"Transformation"

Bokeh

Using the focal length to keep a subject area in focus, while "throwing" the background out of focus is often referred to as "Bokeh." That is the technique I used for this photo.

Ain't No Way to Slow Down"

Black & White with Enhancements

In this photo, I adjusted the sky to provide more contrast in the photo. I think it gives the photo more of an "Ominous" feel, or makes you think bad things are ahead down those tracks...

"Rough Spot"

Bonus!

The above photo was taken in an area of my town that average people really should not go to. As you can see this graffiti is not only very well done, but there are also easily recognized gang-related symbols here as well. As a photographer, I felt comfortable going here only because I was from this city, born and raised. Even then, things could easily "go south" quickly if a person is not careful. Carrying expensive equipment, etc., puts an individual in an easily victimized position. If you choose to "Urban Photograph," take some form of protection, like pepper spray, and always maintain your awareness!

"End of the Tunnel"

Using Light as an Element

Catching a person at the end of this lighted alley took about half an hour, but I really needed a focal point there. You can easily see how I used the lighting as an element of the composition of this photo.

"FD Respect"

Perspective

Here I used the perspective of an upward angle to show the common Fire Hydrant as a "Powerful" symbol.

"Trash Can Man"

Close Up

Here just a standard close-up is used as the main element in the composition of this photo of a padlock on a dumpster.

"Help is Here"

Rule of Thirds

In this photo, I use the "Rule of Thirds" to draw attention to the end of the alley. You can see that those lines lay roughly on where the third mark in this photo, as does the bottom of the wooden stairway.

"Transitions"

Contrast

In this photo, the main composition point is the contrast in colors which causes the reddish leaf to become a main focal point without being drastically different as an object.

"Here I Am"

Again, the same concept as in the above photo is used in this one, but here, I used an edit to make the contrast between colors more obvious.

"Split Shift"

Personal Favorite

Above is my personal favorite photo that I have taken. I was fortunate enough to catch this gentleman changing his shoes before going in to work at a local restaurant. When you first look, it appears that maybe this guy was homeless or something, but in reality. he is just getting ready for work. I know because I asked his permission to use this photo before I just put his image on the internet.

Thank you!

Thank you for reading, I hope you enjoyed seeing some of my photography, and I hope you can see the beauty in these images the way I did! Have a great day!
