Last Christmas, one of the gifts I gave my son was a Bitcoin paper wallet for 0.01 BTC, advising him to not touch it for at least several years. It's gone up in value not quite 1000% since then.
I can teach him about crypto, but his entrepreneurial spirit is something he's learned all on his own. He'll go far in life.
Love the concept of teaching kids about money that's based on a "proof of work" instead of the FRN route. Personally...I'm a late comer to this game and have a LOT of catching up to do. It sickens me to know that I could have invested one or two thousand dollars in bitcoin back in 2008 and ended up not doing it because I didn't understand it.

Also, you say your trading cryptos now? By what means? Through what platform? Do you day trade or are these long term holds. I just recently opened up a coinbase and Poloniex account, but I have literally NO IDEA what I'm doing.
Yeah, I've been trading off and on since 2013. Coinbase is a good fiat on-ramp, but ultimately you want to keep your cryptocurrency stored in paper wallets or hardware wallets like a Ledger Nano S or Trezor. As for trading, I had some issues with Poloniex a while back, so I'm avoiding them for now. Bittrex is pretty good and if you have Coinbase you can also use GDax (owned by the same company). For SmartCash I've used HitBTC and Cryptopia. I have a lot of exchange accounts. I'd also highly recommend getting into the BitShares world as it's a decentralized exchange meaning you own your own cryptocurrency because you control the private key (no centralized third party you have to trust). Cryptocurrency trading is a wild and crazy ride. You can learn a lot, but only play with what you're willing to lose. As for learning, I suggest searching for some popular YouTube videos to get started.

Would you mind taking a look at the comments on this post? @decentralizd tried to tip me a large amount but it didn't go through the first time and the second time went to a non-existent steem account due to a typo. Third time didn't go through (I don't think).
Your son is a lucky one. Wished I was his age when I got into crypto (Oh yeah, at that age there was no crypto). I can imagine how fast he'd grab the concept and in ten years time he'd be a wealthy cryptocurrency guru. Doing a lot of great things, but not too late for me, we are still early adopters, greater things still ahead. It is an adventure worth taking. No regrets. Thanks for sharing, now I'd show it to my cousin who thinks he's too young to learn about cryptocurrency :)
Awesome post Luke. I've been teaching friends at work and my wife about Crypto, and it is like a foreign language sometimes. Explaining it to one co-worker I ended up making him consider why our fiat paper money having value is so different than BTC or other cryptos. He still had a hard time accepting it, haha.
Thankfully my wife has a better grasp, so we've recently been talking about how we want to integrate crypto into our kids savings. My son has been working and saving every fiat dollar he earns to buy a kayak, but your post got me thinking to maybe start teaching him about crypto too. He's 7, my daughter is 4 (so not quite earning the same principles yet).
I'm looking forward to getting my first smart rewards in a couple days; I bought Smartcash when you first starting talking about it. Now seems like a good time to buy more, and it could be an encouraging one for kids because of the Smart rewards.
I remember when I was younger buying a CD would give a good return on savings after one year. We looked into CDs for our kids and I couldn't believe how bad the interest rates were. Pointless. I figure when they're adults, crypto savings accounts I start now could be worth a lot more and a bigger part of how money functions in our world (hopefully).

One of the biggest problems with crypto-currencies is that they aren't tangible. You can't see them laying there. You can't go through your couch cushions to see if any fell out of your wallet.
If you don't remember you had them, and as you get more coins and more wallets, then they just fall into the memory hole.
I know this will be solved in the near future. (near meaning decades)
And, I am glad your son is already into cryptos. It will make his life much easier as all of us shift over.

Yeah, it's a paradigm shift many are not easily able to make. Just this morning, he was explaining it to Aria (his 6yo sister) that SmartCash really is "real money." She was like, "I want SmartCash too!" :)

I also love how you share you interest with your kids. It funny as I fell into traveling at a the age of 20. Now 15 years later my parents are finally coming to understand it and accept it. Neither of them have barely even left the country for other than a two week guided vacation. So they were like what is up with this kid for years.
But I now thoroughly have their support and they are proud of what I'm doing here on steemit. If you ever notice my replies @kaydeross is my father. At 31 one rep and 12 steem power. He just follows me and gives me encouraging comments on my posts. It's great to have supportive parents. You're doing so well. I hope to have a family like yours some day....but a travel family!

Never had much luck with the paying for chores concept. They never had any money and I was frustrated because chores never got done. I changed to a system where they always get their pocket money no matter what ($0.5 per year of age per week) and chores are an expectation of a functional family. Failure to do chores meant loss of privilege etc. This way chores tended to get done and they always had money of their own even from a very young age. My youngest is now 18 and I switched his pocket money about 6 months ago to Ether and Bitcoin. He never asks me for money. He always has some.
My kids beg to do the chores because they really want the money. They sometimes argue with each other for who gets to do what. Maybe you weren't paying enough. :) You have to match supply and demand curves.

I used to run a bitcoin meetup back in 2013/2014 but it ended up morphing into a non-profit that ended up being a big waste of time. You can't go through your couch cushions to see if any fell out of your wallet.
If you don't remember you had them, and as you get more coins and more wallets, then they just fall into the memory hole.
I know this will be solved in the near future. (near meaning decades)
And, I am glad your son is already into cryptos. It will make his life much easier as all of us shift over.

Yeah, it's a paradigm shift many are not easily able to make. Just this morning, he was explaining it to Aria (his 6yo sister) that SmartCash really is "real money." She was like, "I want SmartCash too!" :)

I also love how you share you interest with your kids. It funny as I fell into traveling at a the age of 20. Now 15 years later my parents are finally coming to understand it and accept it. Neither of them have barely even left the country for other than a two week guided vacation. So they were like what is up with this kid for years.
But I now thoroughly have their support and they are proud of what I'm doing here on steemit. If you ever notice my replies @kaydeross is my father. At 31 one rep and 12 steem power. He just follows me and gives me encouraging comments on my posts. It's great to have supportive parents. You're doing so well. I hope to have a family like yours some day....but a travel family!

Thanks Luke. I I'm sure your kids would be so excited wherever you take them. As parents you'll get the joy of living the experience through them as well. I've met families who travel together. Great tweet. I'm yet to travel with one of those adapters, the "world travel pro" has actually never been to Europe! But I plan on spending next summer there, so I aught to get one. My travels have been mostly all over Asia and Latin America.
It's funny as I am familiar with that adaptr item and have seen it before......yet that is my very first time looking at a twitter page! Can you believe it! lol The only communication tech I've ever used on the PC until now was email! Maybe that is why all my comments are like long email type letters! lol. Hope you don't mind. I basically skipped 10+ years of Facebook and Instant Messenger and came right to steemit!

Hahah! I think that's certainly a possibility. Money will be thought of as language, something we use to express ourselves.
Never had much luck with the paying for chores concept. They never had any money and I was frustrated because chores never got done. I changed to a system where they always get their pocket money no matter what ($0.5 per year of age per week) and chores are an expectation of a functional family. Failure to do chores meant loss of privilege etc. This way chores tended to get done and they always had money of their own even from a very young age. My youngest is now 18 and I switched his pocket money about 6 months ago to Ether and Bitcoin. He never asks me for money. He always has some.
My kids beg to do the chores because they really want the money. They sometimes argue with each other for who gets to do what. Maybe you weren't paying enough. :) You have to match supply and demand curves.
I can't wait to be able to teach my child.
You're going to love it. And it will be the hardest thing you've ever done.
I'm sure your kid will be a genius at relationships, social media, and cryptocurrency.

Oh cool! There are a number of various meetups (check meetup.com), though I haven't been very active with them lately. I used to run a bitcoin meetup back in 2013/2014 but it ended up morphing into a non-profit that ended up being a big waste of time. I've been getting a lot of value out of online meetups and discussions like this. Let me know when you show up, maybe we can get some steemians together for a meal.
