My adventure with Steem started with book reviews, but I haven't written about them in a long time. That's because I'm stuck in a completely different world. Flat. Carried on the backs of four elephants standing on the shell of a turtle drifting in the sky.	Moja przygoda ze Steemem zaczęła się od wpisów o książkach, ale dawno tu o nich nie pisałam. I am talking about the Discworld.	Mówię o Świecie Dysku.


Its centerpoint is Cori Celesti, a 10 mile high spire of rock and green ice. Above its top is the land of the gods, Dunmanifestin. Around it there is a range of Ramtop Mountains and Hubland Steppes. Due to the closeness of Cori Celesti, the magical field is stronger here than closer to the edge. In Ramtops there is a small kingdom Lancre, from which many wizards come and which is inhabited by witches.	Jego oś stanowi Cori Celesti, wysoka na 10 mil iglica skały i zielonego lodu. The edge of the disc is bounded by the Rim Ocean, whose waters flow over the edge.	Krawędź dysku opasa Ocean Krawędziowy, którego wody spływają poza krawędź.


Cori Celesti is the geographical center of the Disc, but the cultural center is in Ankh-Morpork. Formerly a kingdom, now a city-state under the benevolent tyranny of Lord Vetinari, Patrician Ankh-Morpork. On the same side of the river is located the Unseen University, the best educational institute on the Disc, educating wizards. The River Ankh is probably the only river in the universe on which the investigators can chalk the outline of the corpse. ("Guards! Guards!")

Rzeka Ankh jest prawdopodobnie jedyną rzeką na świecie, na której śledczy mogą wyrysować kredą obrys zwłok. ("Straż! Straż!")


Its convenient location makes the port of Ankh-Morpork an important centre of international trade. It attracts people and other races from all over the Disc. There are embassies of most countries and numerous temples of different gods.	Dogodna lokalizacja czyni port w Ankh-Morpork ważnym ośrodkiem handlu międzynarodowego. Ściągają tu ludzie i osobniki innych ras z całego Dysku. Znajdują się tu ambasady większości krajów oraz liczne świątynie różnych bogów.


Culture develops here through the Opera House, a small Dysk theatre is located nearby and the Odium has moving pictures.	Kultura rozwija się tutaj za sprawą Opery, niedaleko niej położony jest niewielki teatr Dysk, zaś w Odium można oglądać ruchome obrazki.


Opposite the Opera House is the current headquarters of the City Watch, Pseudopolis Yard. The Watch, open to recruits of all races, commanded by Sam Vimes, watches for order and organised crime. And this one is organized because there are many legally sanctioned guilds in the city, including the Thieves' Guild, the Assassins' Guild, the Beggars' Guild and the Seamstresses' Guild (the ladies associated in this guild are not necessarily sewing...).	Naprzeciwko budynku Opery jest obecna siedziba straży, Pseudopolis Yard. Straż, otwarta na rekrutów wszelkich ras, dowodzona przez Sama Vimesa pilnuje porządku i zorganizowanej przestępczości. A ta jest zorganizowana, bowiem w mieście działają liczne prawnie usankcjonowane gildie, w tym Gildia Złodziei, Gildia Skrytobójców, Gildia Żebraków czy Gildia Szwaczek (zrzeszone w niej panie zajmują się niekoniecznie szyciem...).

Ankh-Morpork is surrounded by Sto Plain, which are famous for cabbage fields, with such cities as Sto Lat (Terry Pratchet admitted that the name was inspired by a Polish song sung as a toast), Sto Helit and Sto Kerrig. Ankh-Morpork is one of a kind, it represents the great urban centers of our world, attracting people who dream of fame, look for a job or simply want to feel the heartbeat of a big city. Terry Pratchett in the Discworld not only in geography refers to the world we know. The books contain parodistic references to history, literature, culture and pop-culture, social and religious issues. The book that started my contact with the Discworld, "Equal Rites" is a story about the eight daughter of eighth son, who, of course, would like to learn magic at the Unseen University. Only that a girl cannot become a wizard. So there is a parody of "A Wizard of the Earthsea" (the "Earthsea" series) by Ursula K. Le Guin and a discussion of the issue of women's rights. The obvious association is with Orson Scott Card fantasy series "Tales of Alvin the Maker", but I'm not sure if the book had an impact on Pratchett, because both were published in the same year. "Moving Pictures" tells their version of the magicof film, and "Music of the Soul" tells about the beginnings of rock and roll. There are also characters who are satirical equivalents of people known from history and pop-culture, such as Leonard of Quirm (Leonardo Da Vinci) and Cohen The Barbarian (Conan The Barbarian). The Discworld has 41 tomes and is separated into individual series: Rincewind novels,Watch novels,Witches novels, Death novels, Moist von Lipvig novels, Tiffany Aching novels. We can also notice a series about ancient civilizations, Unseen University, industrial revolution and a series for younger audiences.	Świat Dysku liczy sobie 41 tomów i dzieli się on na poszczególne cykle: Cykl o Rincewindzie,Cykl o Straży, Cykl o Wiedźmach z Lancre, Cykl o Śmierci, Cykl o Moiście von Lipwigu, Cykl o Tiffany Obolałej. można też wyróznić cykl o starożytnych cywilizacjach, cykl o Niewidocznym Uniwersytecie, cykl o rewolucji przemysłowej, cykl dla młodszych odbiorców.

The covers of the books in the Discworld series are colourful and expressing. The author of 26 of them was Josh Kirby, and later (after the death of Josh Kirby) Pratchett's illustrator Paul Kidby. After the fourth book ("Mort" 1987), Terry Pratchett quit his job as press officer for the Central Electricity Generating Board to concentrate to writing. He wrote two books a year, and these were sold more and more and held high on the bestseller lists. He won the British Book Awards and became a Officer of the Order of the British Empire for his services to literature. He also wrote books with other writers, such as the cycle "Long Earth" with Stephen Baxter, "Good Omen" with Neil Gaiman.	Pisał książki również z innymi pisarzami, np. Cykl "Długa Ziemia" ze Stephenem Baxterem, "Dobry Omen" z Neilem Gaimanem.


In 2007, Terry Pratchett was diagnosed with a rare form of Alzheimer's disease. In one of his books ("The Night Watch") he referred to this disease: the citizens of Ankh-Morpork wear a branch of lilac attached to their clothes, which is a symbol of the fight against Alzheimer.	W 2007 roku u Terrego Pratchetta zdiagnozowano rzadką odmianę Alzheimera. W jednej ze swoich książek ("Straż nocna") nawiązał do tej choroby: mieszkańcy Ankh-Morpork noszą przypięte do ubrań gałązki bzu, który jest symbolem walki z Alzheimerem.


Terry Pratchett died on March 12, 2015. His assistant, Rob Wilkins, posted such words on Terry's official Twitter account:	12 marca 2015 roku Terry Pratchett zmarł. Jego asystent, Rob Wilkins, zamieścił wówczas na oficjalnym koncie Terrego na Twitterze takie słowa:

AT LAST, SIR TERRY, WE MUST WALK TOGETHER.
Terry took Death's arm and followed him through the doors and on to the black desert under the endless night.

Świetny opis Świata Dysku, będę do niego wracał niejednokrotnie! Widzę, że Twoja przygoda zaczęła się od cyklu o wiedźmach, to zbieg okoliczności czy zamierzony wybór? :)

Przypadek. W mojej bibliotece "Równoumagicznienie" było jedyną książką Terrego Pratchetta i w ogóle dział fantasy był mocno ubogi, więc czytałam co było.
