Here is the latest on development of the next version of cXc Music!
Database Upgrade
We have now completed the shift over to a PostgreSQL database on the development copy of cXc Music, and are currently working on integrating all of the exciting geo-temporal features of the curation system.
Curation Changes
We are changing the nature of the granularity of the curation system. While we had previously chosen to use ZIP codes as the smallest unit of geographic curation, we have decided to go with cities which we believe makes a lot more sense. We have also decided to stick with strict geopolitical boundary, namely counties and states within the United States, and Nations outside of the United States for the time being. This is a change from the original purple paper, which included areas, and regions. We do plan to have these additional geographic boundaries in future releases.
Why no ZIP codes
From a technical perspective, ZIP codes are not polygons, they are points and delivery routes (lines) which determine where the post office will deliver. Also, some ZIP codes are just for PO boxes, and some for single high-traffic addresses (think mailing your taxes). There are also vast areas of states, particularly Alaska, that do not have any ZIP code. This makes ZIP codes not a good option for a curation system like ours, even though there are several providers which offer unofficial shapefiles of ZIP codes.
From a real-world perspective, most cities span several zip codes. Most people, especially if they aren't a native of a particular city, do not care about which zip code something comes from, they only care that it comes from that city.
What is a city?
First off, small towns are called cities too, so don’t think we are leaving out the little guys. Our database has over 28,000 cities in the US that we will be tracking in our curation system.
Here's an idea of how many points of cities cXc Music (Beta) will include, using the actual database cXc will run on.
Posting to a City
In the new upload process, users will be given a drop-down menu that is populated with the cities the post is nearby. This means that users can choose to assign their music to a city that may not be the closest city to the post, but they will not be able to choose a city that is far away from where they tagged the music. Obviously, they are always welcome to post to any place, this just gives some wiggle room for the uploaders to post an accurate location and still represent the city they feel fits the work.
We believe that this is necessary to deal with suburbs. A post may be closer to a suburb (technically another city) of the city, but the artist may want to directly tag the city itself.
Outside of the United States
Each nation will have its own chart in the latest version, but just one national chart. Despite our enthusiasm, we will not be able to launch localized charts for the entire world at this time. The simple reason is that each country has a unique geopolitical breakdown. It makes more sense for us to add one nation at a time as we have planned from the beginning.
When local charts in a nation arrive, the past posts will be sorted into local charts (forward compatibility).
The Roadmap is Clear
We have created a roadmap which takes us from where we are to the mobile application. I will be sharing this roadmap with you in a post coming in the next few days.
I also look forward to updating you to our progress in conceptualizing roles, which we hinted at in the last update. In short, we have decided upon an Artist role and a Changer role in addition to the laid-out Guardian role. Both of these roles will have levels from 1 to 4, just like Guardians, have additional privileges on the system, and will be given a share of the collected Blue for each time unit, just like Guardians.
