Manhattan, a New York district full of architecture, artistic manifestations, two rivers and a spectacular park

Writing about New York seems audacious, what can be said about this mega metropolis that has not been said before. However, the personal warmth of the 60 photographs taken by my relatives is new, and the stories they told when we reviewed the series of photos, the data found on the Internet, plus some texts of my property. Unfortunately, I have not been to New York for a long time due, among other things, to the economic limitations that have been imposed, for several years, on state employees, to which is added the pandemic suffered in the whole world during the last two years, which we hope will soon come to an end, for the humanity sake. I have known New York City with its five boroughs and its neighbor New Jersey since I was a teenager, I was lucky enough to study in the USA in the second half of the 60's in Michigan. A dear friend, Susan, invited me, in 1966, to spend the end of the year at her parents' house in the Jewish quarter of Williamsburg; so, on that first visit to the island, I had an exceptional guide who knew in detail the most important parts of the city. From there I was captivated by the cultural richness of this metropolis, well known throughout the world. Although, we came from Michigan, a frozen state in the north central USA, I must confess that I did not expect to find such a cold climate, with its respective winds, perhaps similar to those of Chicago. But despite everything, I enjoyed not only the company and the family warmth they gave me, but I also spent some very busy New Year's Eve parties, getting to know one place after another.

I want, first of all, to point out that my relatives, authors of the photos, went to Manhattan at two different times, Alfonso, my brother-in-law, and his beloved wife visited the city in 2016, while my eldest daughter with her husband and children were there in 2015. Alfonso's camera is rich in details, which can be seen inside the writing. The selection of photos has been made in such a way that the two families complement each other in what is captured by their cameras. All photos are accompanied by some information that I have considered relevant or curious about the photographed place.

I do not want to make the mistake of wrongly thinking that New York is limited to Manhattan, since it is known that the city is made up of five boroughs, namely Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and Staten Island. We have circumscribed ourselves to Manhattan, as all the photos were taken in that district. Several places have always attracted more attention than others, for example; Central Park, Fifth Avenue, the Statue of Liberty, Museums, iconic neighborhoods such as Little Italy, Chinatown, Harlem, among others, are also highly visited: The Rockefeller Financial Center. its legendary skyscrapers, St. Patrick's Church, the UN headquarters, and a long etcetera. Escribir sobre Nueva York parece audaz, qué se puede decir de esta mega metrópoli que no se haya dicho antes. Sin embargo, es nueva la calidez personal de las 60 fotografías tomadas por mis familiares, y las historias que contaron cuando revisamos la serie de fotos, los datos encontrados en internet, más algunos textos de mi propiedad. Lamentablemente, hace tiempo que no voy a Nueva York debido, entre otras cosas, a las limitaciones económicas que nos han impuesto, desde hace varios años, a los asalariados estatales, a lo que se suma la pandemia sufrida en mundo entero, en los dos últimos años, que esperamos lleguen pronto a su fin, por el bien de la humanidad.

Conozco la ciudad de Nueva York con sus cinco distritos y su vecina New Jersey desde mi adolescencia, tuve la suerte de estudiar en USA en la segunda mitad de los años 60 en Michigan. Una entrañable amiga, Susan, me invitó, en 1966, a pasar el fin de año en la casa de sus padres en el barrio judío de Williamsburg; tuve, entonces, en esa primera visita a la isla, una guía excepcional que conocía al detalle las partes mas importantes de la ciudad. Desde allí quedé prendado de la riqueza cultural de esta metrópoli, archi conocida en el mundo entero. Aunque, veníamos de Michigan, Estado gélido del centro norte de USA, debo confesar que no esperaba encontrar un clima tan frío, con sus respectivos vientos, tal vez parecidos a los de Chicago. Pero a pesar de todo, disfruté no sólo la compañía y el calor familiar que me brindaron, sino que pasé unas fiestas de fin de año muy movidas, conociendo un lugar tras otro.

Quiero, en primer lugar, señalar que mis familiares, autores de las fotos, fueron a Manhattan en dos tiempos distintos, Alfonso, mi cuñado, y su querida esposa visitaron la ciudad en 2016, mientras que mi hija mayor con su esposo e hijos estuvieron allí en 2015. La cámara de Alfonso es prolija en detalles, los cuales se podrán apreciar al interior del escrito. La selección de fotos se ha hecho de tal forma que las dos familias se complementen en lo captado por sus cámaras. Todas las fotos van acompañadas de algún dato que he considerado relevante o curioso sobre el lugar fotografiado.

No quiero cometer el error de decir que Nueva York se limita a Manhattan, pues es conocido que la ciudad está conformada por cinco distritos (boroughs), a saber, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx y Staten Island. Nos hemos circunscrito a Manhattan, pues todas las fotos fueron tomadas en ese distrito. Varios lugares siempre han atraído más la atención que otros, por ejemplo; el Parque Central, la Quinta Avenida, la Estatua de la Libertad, los Museos, los barrios icónicos como la Pequeña Italia, el Barrio Chino, Harlem, entre otros, también son muy visitados: El Centro Financiero Rockefeller. sus legendarios rascacielos, la Iglesia San Patrick, la sede de la ONU, y un largo etcétera. Espero, sinceramente, les guste el viaje fotográfico que realizaremos por esta parte de la ciudad. Los comentarios serán gratamente recibidos.
