As written here, I think that network effects exist for languages, and similarly for currencies.
As long as there was no internet and movement of people was very (veeery) slow, languages could branch out. For example when the Roman Empire fell (or rather was scaled down), its bureaucracy and its infrastructure decayed - and with that (Vulgar) Latin (wiki) as the language of correspondence evolved differently in the regions (of the former Empire).
Later on (especially by the 19th century, through better infrastructure, further connectivity within nation states, and central media) we got a process of re-homogenization. One example would be the forming of Italian as the national language of Italy - that evolved over centuries from many different dialects such as Tuscan, Franco-Provençal, Friulian, Ladin, Occitan, Sardinian, Sicilian, Lombard, Piedmontese, etc.). By this process many of these regional languages died, and today many languages are "endangered" (source).
I expect this development to continue on a global scale. In my opinion
- the optimal number of languages within a network/community is 1 (the winner takes it all, lingua franca),
- English is the language that will reign supreme.
because
- today English is the most widespread language.
- the Internet is an indestructible medium and consists mostly of English content (62%, source).
- If you want to access broad and up-to-date information, you choose English websites or journalists. The most successful books are first published in English because as an author you can reach the most people with English.
- With each new English speaker, the incentive for others to learn English increases. As more and more people switch to English, many languages will die, and the communication between people will get more efficient and with less frictions.
- English is rather easy
So, I think that more and more people will choose to read and write in English. I don't see any other language (as Chinese or Hindi) able to break this network effect.
Recent developments in that direction:
- Uzbekistan Aims For Full Transition To Latin-Based Alphabet By 2023 (source).
- Ukraine may give English status of business language -prime minister (source).
- Demographic data show that Russian and Chinese population will decline a lot over the coming decades. Hence, their languages will become less important.
I love languages and hope that as many languages as possible are preserved as languages contain the history, culture and soul of a people. But I can't and don't want to stop the tendency towards one world language - as that enables efficiency in communication and prevents misunderstandings. Plus, the sheer breadth of English publications is very likely to bring with it a wide range of (international) information. So learning English is especially important for the people in autocracies (thinking of Russia and China where only 12 resp. 1% of the population speak English, source).

Wie bereits hier geschrieben, denke ich, dass es sowohl für Sprachen als auch für Währungen Netzwerkeffekte gibt.
Solange es kein Internet gab und der Personenverkehr sehr (seeeehr) langsam war, konnten sich Sprachen verzweigen. Als z.B. das Römische Reich unterging (oder eher verkleinert wurde), zerfielen seine Bürokratie und seine Infrastruktur - und damit differenzierte sich das (Vulgär-)Latein (wiki) in den Regionen (des ehemaligen Reiches) unterschiedlich aus.
Später (v.a. ab dem 19. Jahrhundert durch eine bessere Infrastruktur, stärkere Vernetzung innerhalb der Nationalstaaten und zentrale Medien) kam es zu einem Prozess der Re-Homogenisierung. Ein Beispiel dafür ist die Herausbildung des Italienischen als Nationalsprache Italiens, das sich im Laufe der Zeit aus vielen verschiedenen Sprachen (Toskanisch, Frankoprovenzalisch, Friaulisch, Ladinisch, Okzitanisch, Sardisch, Sizilianisch, Lombardisch, Piemontesisch usw.) entwickelt hat. Durch diesen Prozess starben viele dieser Regionalsprachen aus, und heute sind weltweit viele Sprachen "vom Aussterben bedroht" (Quelle).
Ich gehe davon aus, dass sich diese Entwicklung weltweit fortsetzen wird. Meiner Meinung nach
- ist die optimale Anzahl von Sprachen innerhalb eines Netzwerks/einer Gemeinschaft 1 (the winner takes it all, lingua franca),
- Englisch ist die Sprache, die die Oberhand gewinnen wird.

- Englisch ist heute die am meisten verbreitete Sprache.
- das Internet ist ein resistentes Medium (im Gegensatz zu einer Bibliothek) und besteht zum größten Teil aus englischen Inhalten (62%, Quelle).
- Wer sich umfassend und aktuell informieren will, wählt englische Websites oder Journalisten. Die erfolgreichsten Bücher werden zuerst auf Englisch veröffentlicht, weil man als Autor mit Englisch die meisten Menschen erreichen kann.
- Mit jedem neuen Englischsprecher steigt der Anreiz für andere, Englisch zu lernen. Wenn immer mehr Menschen auf Englisch umsteigen, werden viele Sprachen aussterben, und die Kommunikation zwischen den Menschen wird effizienter und reibungsloser werden.
- Englisch ist relativ leicht
Ich denke also, dass sich immer mehr Menschen dafür entscheiden werden, auf Englisch zu lesen und zu schreiben. Ich kann mir nicht vorstellen, dass eine andere Sprache (wie Chinesisch oder Hindi) diesen Netzwerkeffekt übertrumpfen kann.
Jüngste Entwicklungen in diese Richtung:
- Usbekistan will bis 2023 vollständig auf das lateinische Alphabet umstellen (Quelle).
- Die Ukraine könnte Englisch zur Geschäftssprache erheben (Quelle).
- Demografische Daten zeigen, dass die russische und chinesische Bevölkerung in den nächsten Jahrzehnten stark zurückgehen wird. Folglich werden ihre Sprachen an Bedeutung verlieren.
Ich liebe Sprachen und hoffe, dass so viele Sprachen wie möglich erhalten bleiben, denn Sprachen enthalten die Geschichte, die Kultur und die Seele eines Volkes. Aber ich kann und will die Tendenz zu einer einzigen Weltsprache nicht aufhalten - denn das ermöglicht eine effiziente Kommunikation und verhindert Missverständnisse. Außerdem ist es sehr wahrscheinlich, dass die schiere Breite an englischsprachigen Veröffentlichungen auch eine breite Palette von (internationalen) Informationen mit sich bringt. Englisch zu lernen ist also besonders wichtig für die Menschen in Autokratien (man denke an Russland und China, wo nur 12 bzw. 1% der Bevölkerung Englisch sprechen, Quelle).

Como he escrito aquí, creo que los efectos de red existen para las lenguas, y de forma similar para las monedas.
Mientras no existiera Internet y la circulación de personas fuera muy (muy) lenta, las lenguas podrían ramificarse. Por ejemplo, cuando el Imperio Romano cayó (o más bien se redujo), su burocracia y su infraestructura decayeron, y con ello el latín (vulgar) (wiki) como lengua de correspondencia evolucionó de forma diferente en las regiones (del antiguo Imperio).
Más adelante (gracias a la mejora de las infraestructuras, la mayor conectividad dentro de los estados nacionales y los medios de comunicación centrales) se produjo un proceso de rehomogeneización. Un ejemplo sería la formación del italiano como lengua nacional de Italia, que evolucionó durante siglos a partir de muchos dialectos diferentes, como el toscano, el franco-provenzal, el friulano, el ladino, el occitano, el sardo, el siciliano, el lombardo, el piamontés, etc.). Con este proceso murieron muchas de estas lenguas regionales, y hoy muchas lenguas están "en peligro de extinción" (fuente).
Espero que esta evolución continúe a escala mundial. En mi opinión
- el número óptimo de lenguas en una red/comunidad es 1 (el ganador se lo lleva todo, lingua franca),
- El inglés es el idioma que reinará.

- Con cada nuevo hablante de inglés, aumenta el incentivo para que otros aprendan inglés. A medida que más y más personas se pasen al inglés, muchos idiomas morirán y la comunicación entre las personas será más eficiente y con menos fricciones.
- El inglés es bastante fácil
Así que creo que cada vez más gente elegirá leer y escribir en inglés. No veo que ninguna otra lengua (como el chino o el hindi) pueda romper este efecto de red.
Los últimos avances en ese sentido:
- Uzbekistán pretende una transición total al alfabeto latino para 2023 (fuente).
- Ucrania podría dar al inglés el estatus de lengua de negocios - primer ministro (fuente).
- Los datos demográficos muestran que la población rusa y china disminuirá mucho en las próximas décadas. Por lo tanto, sus lenguas serán menos importantes.
Me encantan las lenguas y espero que se conserve el mayor número posible de ellas, ya que las lenguas contienen la historia, la cultura y el alma de un pueblo. Pero no puedo ni quiero detener la tendencia hacia una sola lengua mundial, ya que eso permite la eficacia en la comunicación y evita los malentendidos. Además, es muy probable que la amplitud de publicaciones en inglés traiga consigo una amplia gama de información (internacional). Así que aprender inglés es especialmente importante para los habitantes de las autocracias (pensando en Rusia y China, donde sólo el 12 y el 1% de la población habla inglés, fuente).

Ein weiterer wichtiger Punkt ist vielleicht noch dass Englisch in wirtschaftlich bedeutenden Ländern in den Schulen standardmäßig unterrichtet wird?!
I agree it's important for effective communication that one language becomes lingua franca. I also agree with the reasons you've given why English would keep dominating and become lingua franca soon.
I'll also like to add a bit about movies and television! No doubt the best movies and television series are in English and even though people can watch with subtitles their English would keep improving as they watch also a lot of them would pick English if they decide to learn a language because they see how it would help them enjoy these movies and television series more.
I'll also like to add that the reason most people are not English speakers in my country (Nigeria) is because they didn't attend school but Education is more accessible now than it was in the past so that would change. Also our towns and cities keep growing and this growth means city people who are good English speakers would mix with those who have been in more secluded areas (and couldn't speak English due to their seclusion) and they and their children would learn English as they'll be influenced by city people. Nigeria has over 525 native languages so English as a lingua franca here has been a massive success.
This reasons for the spread of English in Nigeria is surely going to be applicable to a lot of Countries out there.

The point about movies and TV is very interesting. I think that accelerates the process of Anglification a lot.
Interessanter Punkt, hab ich noch nie in der Konsequenz drüber nachgedacht obwohl mir natürlich auch klar ist, dass Englisch schon sehr dominant ist (aus den genannten guten Gründen).
En donde vivo de hecho ya no se habla el idioma nativo, se podría decir que lamentablemente ese idioma se perdió y fue suplantado por el de los invasores (Español). Usted siempre escribe en 3 idiomas así que creo fielmente eso que dice de amar la diversidad de idiomas 😂.
