It is high time for the United States to pass a national law that protects the privacy of individuals and grants protection against unauthorized access and perhaps consider granting property rights to the data subjects.

Our personal data reveals a lot about us. Unless we are hermits staying away from civilization, we are constantly revealing data about us to governments and corporations through the technologies we use. Through these technologies, intelligence is gathered about our habits, behaviors, finances, health, hopes and desires. These data when processed becomes potent in the hands of corporations and governments who can then use them any way they like to manipulate and control us and profit from us.

We are of the view that the protection granted to EU residents via GDPR will prove itself insufficient soon with the advancement of technologies such as ai and iot. Governments should enact laws to make data a personal property of the data subjects so that property rights are enured for the benefit of the data subjects, which will provide wider protection than what is currently provided under GDPR in the EU and other laws elsewhere.
