Sterilization project begins, unfortunately with some major hiccups

in #dogs4 years ago

As I mentioned previously we have found a pack that is isolated and are trying to sort our their potential population issues before it becomes too much of a problem. Once packs get too large they normally will succumb to disease and hunger and then they become a nuisance to the community they are staying in. At this point it is only a matter of time before one of the members of that community will create a home solution, normally in the form of rat poison mixed in with some sort of food.

We have seen plenty of cases regarding this sort of dispatching of homeless dog populations and it isn't pretty. It is a slow and painful way for the animal to die and in the cases that we have attempted to intervene in, many times it is something that even a veterinarian can't do anything about other than the put the dog to sleep in order to end its suffering.

In our latest case, we have been working for 3 days now with very little success because the dogs are very unwilling to trust us, despite our bribes of food.

We did manage to catch one of the females who is going to be spending about a week with us while we perform the surgery and vaccinations before putting her back with the pack. The others we will continue to visit daily in the hopes that they will start to realize that we are not there to harm them and always come bearing gifts. This is the only approach we can take because we will not tranquilize the dogs and the fact that we even have that sort of equipment is of questionable legality anyway.

This female was particularly unwilling to allow us near her but after a half day around the pack we finally found out why. Turns out she already has two pups stashed and she is following her natural instincts to look after them the best that she can.

If we can manage to earn her trust, when we transport her, obviously we are going to bring the pups along with us as well. We will not treat them at this time since doing so can be dangerous for dogs younger than 6 months, which these clearly are. We will, however keep an eye on them and treat them as soon as the time comes and money makes is possible for us to do so.

So at the moment this location still has a lot of work to be done and the males in particular are very unapproachable. It is more important to get the females of course, but eventually we hope to be able to get them all. We still have 3 more females to do and hopefully after the pack sees us every day bringing food they will be a little more compliant and allow us to give them a ride the the clinic. It is for their own good.

We have also passed around flyers making the neighbors aware of what we are doing and hopefully this will encourage them to give the pack some food or at the minimum not poison them.
