Portraits of Persistence:

I'm making models out of main characters from different manga. Take this unsightly hero, for one. Goblin Slayer did not earn his moniker thru heroic acts of rescuing villages from dragons. He donned it fittingly, nearly mocked by the adventurer's guild for ounsijg the sinister, child-sized goblins.

The details of his origin are too grim for recollection, yet we come to understand his traumas warp him onto a path of carnage, for the runty, non-praying characters. I follow his tale, as it mirrors campaigns in the popular role-playing game, Dungeons & Dragons.

Why More Manga?

The dogged persistence, as a result of his vilified vendetta against the villainous imps, sheds light on a few parallels one might emulate to their own applied successes. While a touch more severe, despite the fantasy undertones, the young man fights with a purpose. He remains curt to a fault, with replies seldom mixing words.

I see...

Is that so?

Still, he defends the weak, protects women and creatively employs any means to dispatch the ravenous beasts.

Fortune Favors The Bold

Could you imagine a chef with without their favorite knife? A candle-pin bowler without their lucky ball? I found myself not long ago with a camera, out of juice, sans its charger and missing the very memory card on which to record images. Suffice to say, I did not capture any images with that tool. Yet the image I created looks like Goblin Slayer's.

It may not be life and death without these things, but for a photographer it was akin.

In fact, my emotions rose up like a volcano, but who could I blame, but myself? I resigned myself to other methods of capture, but the lesson remains. Besides, seeking out others to hold responsible would lead down a treacherous path of never rising to the challenge.

An interesting perspective to keep in mind...

As GS put it, my inexperience and poor preparation wear me down. Yet, this too reveals I could improve. So long as I remember my task, I could keep going.

No. Far from over, I see my journey only beginning as I delve into trading, improve at work and capture stories to tell my own tale.

Right. The goal is to create something that does. This is how we never die.

The window of opportunity isn't open forever, either.

Post Summary

  • Goblin Slayer draws a fine line around the picture of persistence.
  • I'm following manga for the deeper tales they tell within the pages, through characters, journeys and the various themes.
  • For one, I could emulate Goblin Slayer's emergency preparedness. A photographer without a photograph is just er...
