At least 100 people killed and 4,000 wounded in a massive explosion that shook the city (where my dad is from).

Beirut is in ruins and mourning. A 2 week state of emergency has been declared.

The people of Lebanon have been through a great deal & I hope their resilience (& friends) will see them through this latest tragedy

Being half Lebanese, I’m saddened, of course, and just heard from my aunt who tells me that our family in Lebanon are ‘alright physically, yet devastated emotionally.’

On a more positive note, it’s uplifting to read this statement from the European Commission :

The EU offers its full support to the Lebanese people. 🇪🇺 🇱🇧

As an immediate first step, we have activated:
◼️ the EU Civil Protection Mechanism upon request of the Lebanese authorities;
◼️ the Copernicus Satellite mapping system to help assess the extent of the damage.

🇳🇱 The Netherlands, 🇬🇷 Greece and 🇨🇿 Czechia have confirmed their participation in this critical operation. 🇫🇷 France, 🇵🇱 Poland and 🇩🇪 Germany have also offered assistance.

We stand with Lebanon and its people and are ready to mobilise further help.
