Fruit it up Baby! - Medicinal Cooking Collective Diets For Ailments & Disease Week 4

in #ecotrain6 years ago

Hi sweethearts! It's time to share my entry to the #naturalmedicine challenge created by Alex @eco-alex and #ecotrain ! I actually love this challenge, and the knowledge it is meant to share from to week to week. I hope to join more often from now on, as it so important to spread more awareness about a healthy lifestyle and healthy food.

So today it's all about fruit, and as I am a great fruit fan, I thought I could share some tips to get more fruits into your daily routine! Fruit are important sources of many nutrients, including potassium (reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke. Potassium may also reduce the risk of developing kidney stones and help to decrease bone loss as you age), fiber, vitamin C and folate (folic acid) which of course is an important source for pregnant women!

I found some funny and interesting facts about fruits on the internet here:

Facts about fruits!

  • Prunes like to be called dried plums. It’s a bit of a PR thing. The California Dried Plum board conducted research showing that women ages 25 to 54 respond more favorably to the name dried plums instead of prunes.
  • Bananas in a bag can ripen avocados. If you’ve got an avocado that’s just not ready to eat, throw it in a paper bag with a ripe banana or apple. The ethylene gas produced by the banana or apple will expedite the ripening of the avocado.
  • Raspberries have the most fiber of all berries. All fruit contains fiber, but raspberries have more fiber per cup (8 grams) than other berries.
  • Coconut and avocados are the only fruits with fat. Most fruit is fat-free because the calories come from carbohydrate. Two notable exceptions are coconut and avocados, which derive most of their calories from fat.
  • Bell peppers are actually fruits. A fruit is the part of a plant that develops from a flower and has seeds, which means that bell peppers (and squash, cucumbers, and pumpkins) fruits rather than vegetables.
  • Oranges aren’t your best source of vitamin C. Most fruits and veggies contain vitamin C, but kiwis blow oranges out of the water. They have twice as much vitamin C as oranges and contain additional vitamins and minerals like potassium.
  • Peel your pomegranates under water. If you struggle to get the arils (seeds) out of a pomegranate, try cutting the pomegranate in half, and submerging it in a bowl of water. The seeds pop right out, the pith floats to the top and it’s a lot less messy than trying to cut it up on a countertop.
  • Grapefruit and certain medications can be a killer combination. When combined with certain types of medication, such as statins for lowering cholesterol, grapefruit and grapefruit juice can cause too much or too little medicine to be released into the body.
  • Peaches and nectarines are pretty much the same things. Genetically, peaches and nectarines are quite similar. The primary difference is the fact that peach has fuzz on its skin while a nectarine does not.
  • Jackfruit can weight up to 100 pounds. A jackfruit can weigh up to 100 pounds and grow as big as 3 feet in length.

Health benefits of different fruits and a true reason why you should enjoy more of them:

Source

  • Banana: protect your heart, strengthen bones, control blood pressure, block diarrhea
  • Lemons and Lime: improve your digestion, detoxing, combats cancer, protect your heart, smoothen skin
  • Grapes: save eyesight, conquer kidney stones, enhance blood flow
  • Pineapple: straighten bones, relieves cold, aids digestion, dissolve warts
  • Strawberries: boost memory, calm stress, protect your heart, combats cancer
  • Apples: prevent constipation, prevent diarrhea, improve lung capacity, cushion joints

Fruits are the gift from nature for us, it grows almost everywhere, and makes you a lot healthier and filled with energy when enjoyed on a daily basis. You need at least 1-2 fruits every day for a balanced diet. But if your body is craving more, eat more!
I often eat a lot more than that! The best way to be sure you get all the health benefits from fruits is when you eat them on an empty stomach as your first meal of the day. My tip is to start with freshly pressed lemon juicy with lukewarm water before you start to eat. Lemon juice with warm (not too hot!) supports your digestion, it also detoxes your body and gives it an antioxidant boost. My little boy naturally prefers fruits in the morning, and even if I offer him porridge or muesli a bit later, he mostly picks out the fruits and raisins.

When it gets colder, I like to enjoy some warm porridge in the morning, but of course with some fruits!

What you will need:

  • about 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1 1/2-2 cups homemade almond milk or any other plantbased milk of choice
  • 1 ripe banana
  • 1/2 apple
  • 1 handful raisins

How to:

  1. Soak the oats in the plantbased milk for 10 minutes.
  2. Cut the banana in pieces or mash it with a fork, cut the apple in small pieces and add both to the pan with soaked oats and plantbased milk, also add the raisins
  3. Stir while heating it up, let it simmer on low heat for 3-5 minutes, stirring from time to time.
  4. When creamy, add to bowls and top with sliced apple, banana, berries or choice, more fruits if wanted! I also like to add tahini or any other nut butter:)
  5. Enjoy warm!

If you need a quick, nourishing and cold breakfast, simply blend 1 cup berries or choice with 1 frozen banana, some rolled oats and plantbased milk of choice. Blend and enjoy!

Berries and fruits are my absolute favorite food, I am sure many of you feel the same! I hope you have learned something about fruits you didn't know, and feel motivated to include more of them to your diet from now on! Remember to choose organic fruits whenever possible!

Much Love to you all and happy Monday!
