Happy Father's Day....

in #fathersday4 years ago (edited)

It's Father's Day. Mine went to heaven in 1997. It seems like yesterday and it feels like forever ago at the same time. I sure do miss him.

I love seeing old photos of him, before he ever knew he'd be my Dad.

I have his eyes shape and color....grey.

He was a responsible person even as a very young man. His father passed when my Dad was 15 and left him man of the house. He took the responsibility seriously and his Mom and siblings were the better off for it.

He worked a few different jobs before, but chose early on to join the fire department. That was what he was doing as young as I can remember.

His chief was impressed with him, so later when his chief got a job with the state, he encouraged Dad to come too..... and he did. He spent the rest of his working life teaching various classes to volunteer fire departments all over the state. Sometimes they burned condemned houses that had been donated for practice burns. This is a photo from one of them. He has the white turnout gear on.

He was a great Dad and adored his family. He is holding baby me in this photo. I was 3rd born.

Easter..... you can tell because we girls had our Easter Bonnets on.

A little later there were 4 of us children. Did your family ever do this?.... have someone come in and take family photos? Do you know how many shots it took to get all the faces good in one photo with this many children?

Eventually and the final number.... 5 children. The first 4 of us were 2 or less years apart, then 7 years later..... there came Brat Baby ! We spoiled her so bad..... and she's still a brat now.

Dad liked playing horseshoes, splitting wood, cracking and picking out black walnuts and sometimes making things like little wooden candle holders out of interesting tree formations he would find. He also made a walking stick out of a twirly limb once and it is still at Mom's house all these years later. In the summer, he especially loved having a garden too... a big one. There wasn't a lazy bone in his body !

I never once felt like he played any favorites. If he had one, it never showed. Although he was firm with the discipline growing up, he was equally warm and affectionate in the proper kind of Dad way.... and funny as the dickens !

We all benefited from having the good kind of father that he was. What a great example he was to each of us.

It's Father's Day and I'm so glad he was mine.

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

Love you !

I really enjoyed seeing those old photos! So cool that you have those to save. Mt dad was not around much, so it is cool to see your dad was!

Too bad I didn't realize it was posted 2 months ago. Well...
