Hero Forge Miniatures: Lavkin Archers

in #figurines4 years ago

Because of their tremendous upper body strength, Rossberan armies in ancient times made use of lavkins as archers more than any other race. Though they may not have been able to harmlessly hit an apple perched atop someone's head, or even hit the broad side of a barn, lavkins were able to send heavy arrows a far greater distance than anyone else.

The Skharans in particular used lavkin archers to defend their castles, and in combination with scorpions (ballistae), made Skharan castles nearly impossible to get close to.

Note that lavkin archers keep their faces a good distance from the arrow - this is to prevent the bowstring from ripping off their right ear. Then again, this being Skhara I'm talking about, I've considered re-positioning the head and simply make a note to cut off the ear on a printed model.

If you think removing an ear is cruel, Greek myths about the Amazons were even crueller - according to some tales, an Amazon would cut off her left breast if it got in the way of her bowstring. Truthfully, that seems a bit odd to me - chest protectors have existed since the bronze age, they are called breastplates. Then again, there is an old Jewish saying that "no story is so good as to not benefit from exaggeration," or something along those lines.

Of course, archers in the field don't need to aim - since they make use of volleys, the objective is to simply cover a large area with so many arrows that anyone caught within gets skewered.

I have to admit, those feet aren't really positioned correctly. Unfortunately, there isn't a whole lot I can do about that. I can't customise the leg poses in Hero Forge.

The last thing to make note of is the position of the tail. It points opposite the way the body is leaning to preserve balance.

I'm almost done sharing all of the miniatures I've made in Hero Forge thus far. In the next couple of days, I'll have more 3D-printed models to share, and I just ordered some new model paint, so I may be able to share some painted models soon as well (depending on how bad they come out, since it's been years since I've painted anything other than a wall).
