Retro Film Review: No Way Home (1996)

Tim Roth used to be one of the more recognisable faces of 1990s American cinema, mostly thanks to his presence in couple of Tarantino films. However, unlike some of Tarantino's actors, he never gained status of a star and rarely managed to carry film by himself. One of rare films that could fit this description is No Way Home, 1996 drama written and directed by Buddy Giovinazzo.

Protagonist of the film is Joey (played by Tim Roth), slightly retarded young man who had spent last six years of life in prison. After release he is determined never to go back behind bars. In order to start new life he visits the home of his brother Tommy (played by James Russo) and seeks place to stay. There he is greeted by Tommy's attractive wife and part-time stripper Lorraine (played by Deborah Kara Unger). Lorraine is at first not very enthusiastic about sharing their home with ex-convict, but soon she gets impressed by Joey's good nature and sincere desire to go straight. Tommy, on the other hand, supports the household as small-time drug dealer. Joey's efforts to make his life better would be jeopardised when Tommy gets in trouble with local gangsters.

The title might have indicated cheap B-thriller, but for the most part No Way Home is actually a serious drama that gives realistic portrayal of the bottom sections of modern American society. The characters are well-drawn and the actors playing them give powerful performance. The best one, of course, belongs to Tim Roth who makes the audience sympathise with his character while not sinking into "cute" sentimental cliches. Deborah Unger is also good in her role of stripper that finds goodness in unexpected places, while James Russo also gives strong performance in convincing portrayal of a man who, despite best intentions, can't overcome his own flaws. No Way Home could have been even better film, but Giovanzzo, apart from some unfortunate directing choices, made the biggest mistake in the last part, where elements of drama give way to predictable thriller cliches. However, this is not enough to seriously damage mostly good impression of the film and No Way Home would satisfy even those viewers who aren't Tim Roth's fans.

RATING: 6/10 (++)
