If there is anything that the Netflix Godzilla movie trilogy has proven, it is that this monsters' concept still works today and can be continuously modernized. The writer of this project, Gen Urobuchi (Madoka Magica, Psycho-Pass), has generated, perhaps, too many expectations. The first two films received mixed reviews, while the third and final, the one that concerns us in this article was mostly acclaimed.
The first two, despite each ending with tense, dramatic moments that leave us wanting more, failed a little because of its slow plot and character development. This third movie starts fast and furious. Revelations that change the rules of the game, character development and the arrival of the modernized version of such a classic villain as it is King Ghidorah -- all of it contribute to deliver an exciting journey into the universe of Godzilla.
One of the most interesting aspects of this trilogy that stands out in this third part is how focused it is on science fiction, especially now reflected in Ghidorah. This enemy, unlike other creatures like Godzilla or Mothra, is not terrestrial. In fact, in the myths of Godzilla, King Ghidorah has always had extraterrestrial origins. However, this is the first time in his entire film history that he feels like an actual alien. Considering that the characters live in a world where monsters like Biollante or Mothra exist, what would make a "simple" three-headed dragon special? Well, here Ghidorah is presented as a gravitational anomaly capable of generating singularities, and thus, warping space-time around itself. As if that were not enough, Ghidorah cannot be perceived by any radar and much less can be touched. It can only be perceived by sight, hearing and the adverse effects it generates around itself, such as disabling the protective shield that allows Godzilla not to receive physical damage.
The effects produced by Ghidorah and his own extradimensional nature make him a terrifying threat in this film, which, rather than for fans of these creatures, the movie is made for fans of science fiction in general.
The role of Ghidorah as the destroyer of those worlds that have reached the peak of prosperity, which is evidenced by the arrival of a Godzilla, gives the trilogy a tragic, fatalistic and, at the same time, fresh touch to the franchise. This role also makes us reflect on our role in the universe, or rather, the lack of it. With everything and its pace issues in the first two films, if we take into account the freshness of concepts, the philosophical aspects addressed, the action scenes full of emotion and the fact that this third film closed with a final flourish, we are before a highly recommended work whether or not you are a Godzilla fan. It is quality anime and science fiction, although it does not exploit all the potential that one would expect from a project with the name of Gen Urobuchi in it, it is 100% worth your time.
