The Bishop's Wife (1947)

Directed by Henry Koster. Starring Cary Grant, Loretta King, David Niven, Monty Woolley, and James Gleeson.

Dejected by his efforts to raise money to build a new cathedral, Bishop Henry Brougham (Niven) beseeches heaven for guidance, and is visited immediately by Dudley (Grant), who claims to be an angel. Henry is skeptical, then annoyed when Dudley ingratiates himself into the household as his assistant...and worse, wins the attentions of Henry's long-suffering and kindly wife (Young).

The film was later remade in 1996 as The Preacher's Wife starring Denzel Washington, Whitney Houston, and Courtney B. Vance.
