Last weekend, the wife and I visited the southwest corner of Florida to do a bit of exploring on that side of the state. It's less than a three hour drive, and with a campsite waiting for us there it's actually a pretty easy trip.
We hit a bunch of spots, but we've always been a fan of parks and preserves. Especially those that don't charge for entrance.
One of these was the somewhat unattractively named Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve, just east of Fort Myers, FL. Lots of walking paths, very clean and 'original' feeling ecosystem, and easy parking.
Proof of Landwhale. This is at our campsite at Koreshan State Park, which was the former home of a cult leader's community. A very interesting story on its own, but now...it is our campsite.

Lots of boardwalks. Not many folks here today, which is nice, but rain was on the horizon, and we didn't want to get trapped at the wrong end of the boardwalk when the rains came.
At least something can grow in these waters. Other than alligators.
Very inhospitable for anyone traveling through these lands. I'm glad we had a boardwalk to make it easier.
I love how the cypress 'knees' push up from the roots of the old trees as little nubs. In truth, sciency people aren't sure of their purpose, but they look like little anthills.
Wild and wet, just how I always prefer my photos to be.
In the end, we did get moist from the rain, but were able to wait it out under a shelter before dashing back to our car.

Do their crocs have different accent from ours?
They wouldn't talk to me, but they definitely wore funny west coast hats.
Did you see any crocs?
Just one, but he wasn't killing anything at that point. He was just floating in the water, doing his best log imitation.
Oh, they're good at that. And then they kill ya!!!!
Nice. It looks almost like a rain forest. Good thing you had a nice dry land whale to run back to when it did rain. Certain types of woods are more eerie and frightening than others, for some reason. In this case, for example, I'd be fearing not only alligators by the possibility of poisonous snakes falling on me out of the trees!
