Homemade Fried Chicken Sandwich

in #foodie4 years ago

Typically we don’t eat much fried food. It’s even rarer that we fry food at home. However, we’ve been eating fairly healthy lately so we wanted to treat ourselves with something more decadent. We landed on a recipe for homemade fried chicken sandwiches. I added a little twist to my sandwich to make it more of a hot chicken sandwich because I tend to like my food spicier.

The recipe is fairly easy. We took chicken thighs and marinated them in buttermilk for about an hour. We then used flour salt pepper garlic powder onion powder and an egg mixture to do the bread coating. We fry the chicken until it was golden brown and cooked thoroughly.

While the chicken was frying we buttered and toasted some sweet rolls and then decided to melt some Swiss cheese on one side.I think the addition of the cheese adds another layer of creamy texture with a crisp bun and even crispier chicken which makes for a delightful bite.

Being that we have a lot of strong flavors we opted to add some lettuce and dill pickle for a little bit of refreshing crunch and acidity to help cut through all the fat. I also added a mixture of Frank’s red hot sauce and butter that was reduced down to give the chicken a nice spicy flavor.

For another layer of creamy texture and more of a complex flavor we made a honey mustard sauce with Spicy mustard, mayonnaise, and honey. It may sound weird, but with a mixture of acidity and honey sweetness it rounds out the entire sandwich.

Overall, it’s not really a hard meal to prepare there’s a little bit of prep time for the chicken marinade, but cooking is pretty quick at around 15 to 25 minutes depending on your oil temperature. The rest is just cutting vegetables if you make your own pickles or buy your lettuce in a head. The rest is just assembly!

Nice! I just had a local restaurants take on Nashville Hot chicken the other day and it was actually quite passable. It is more of a dry heat than what the Franks gives you, but I really love it. Have you ever tried soaking your chicken in a brine of dill pickle juice? That is pretty awesome too. This looks amazing!

This was more of Buffalo as I’ve not been able to really recreate hot chicken as it should be. I’ve never heard of using pickle juice, but I’ll run it by the wife who’s the pro chef to get her thoughts.
