En Una Esquina de Caracas

Transitar por la ciudad de Caracas un domingo por la tarde tiene sus ventajas si eres un fotógrafo aventurero que se atreve a sacar su teléfono o su cámara en la calle; pero vale la pena el intento si el resultado será el recuerdo de un encuentro casual con dos personajes pintoresco en una esquina del sector de Chacao.
Sus nombres, Virgilio González y José Gregorio Vivas Camacho, antiguos pobladores del casco histórico de Chacao, compañeros de esquina para echarse cuentos y ocurrencias, pero con extraños la cosa es diferente, son reservados y suspicaces; es lo debido creo yo, ya que no importa cuanta fama tengan los venezolanos de simpáticos y bonachones la cautela también es importante, sobre todo con dos jóvenes muchachos que se le acercan para pedirles el favor de tomarles una foto porque "están de fotografía". -¿Otra vez?!- Exclama el señor Virgilio- ¿están haciendo cola o que?, hace un momento paso otro muchacho y nos pidió sacarnos también una foto, voy a tener que cobrar!.
No pude evitar reír con ese comentario y le pedí por favor de nuevo poder tomarle una foto con su consentimiento a cambio de una chuchería si ellos querían -Esta bien esta bien, que va ser- aprobó el Sr. Virgilio.
De una terminaron siendo 20 fotos, cada una mas explicita que la otra, mientras, ellos nos contaban historias de como ellos fueron testigos del cambio de la calle a lo largo de las décadas. Casi pude ver a través de su mirada los recuerdos de su niñez y la descripción de las calles que alguna vez fueron y ya no volverán a ser.
El tiempo paso y varias veces he vuelto a pasar por esa esquina pero de los señores Virgilio y José nada volví a saber; solo el recuerdo y las fotos me quedan de aquel momento y ahora lo comparto con los que lo quieran leer.

Walking through the city of Caracas on a Sunday afternoon has its advantages if you are an adventurous photographer who dares to take out your phone or camera on the street; but it is worth the attempt if the result will be the memory of a chance encounter with two colorful characters on a corner of the Chacao sector.
Their names, Virgilio Gonzalez and Jose Gregorio Vivas Camacho, former residents of the historic center of Chacao, corner companions to tell each other stories and witticisms, but with strangers the thing is different, they are reserved and suspicious; it is due I think, because no matter how much reputation Venezuelans have for being nice and kind, caution is also important, especially with two young boys who approach them to ask them the favor of taking a picture because "they are photographing". -*Again," exclaims Mr. Virgilio, "are you standing in line or what, just a moment ago another boy passed by and asked us to take a picture too, I'm going to have to charge him!
I couldn't help laughing with that comment and I asked him again to please take a picture with his consent in exchange for a candy if they wanted to -All right, that's fine, that will be fine- Mr. Virgilio approved.
From one ended up being 20 photos, each one more explicit than the other, while they told us stories of how they witnessed the street change over the decades. I could almost see through their eyes the memories of their childhood and the description of the streets that once were and will never be again.
Time went by and several times I have passed by that corner again, but I never heard from Virgilio and José again; only the memory and the photos remain of that moment and now I share it with those who want to read it.

Excelentes fotografías y relatos, realmente dos personajes cada un con un estilo y carácter bien diferenciados. El tono sepia de las fotos refuerza la idea que comentas de esos días que fueron y ya no volverán a ser... ciertamente estos personajes con el tiempo ya no estarán y personajes como ellos serán muy difíciles de encontrar.
