Word of the Day: Ultracrepidarian

in #fun4 years ago

I was minding my own business when Susie Dent's twattery sent me down a Wikipedia rabbit hole:

Dunning-Kruger effect has by now claimed some notoriety in popular culture and describes a cognitive bias that makes it impossible to judge one's own competency in a field without first having aquired a certain level of mastery and self-awareness.

Somewhat related is the term

Ultracrepidarian: a person with the habit to give advice on topics far outside their domain of expertise.

It is ironic that Pliny the Elder was intstrumental in popularizing the latinized version:

Sutor, ne ultra crepidam.

 Which translates to:

A cobbler should stick to his last

It remains in use in many languages to this day. It is ironic because Pliny the Elder is a great example of an ultracrepidarian.
