Greetings, fungi lovers. This mushroom is one I saw earlier today on my maple tree. It comes back in a different spot every year. It is actually edible when young and tender but generally does not make good eating, as least in my opinion.
The older they get, the more milky threads form connecting them. I suspect they are our carry spores, which come the the pores underneath.
This tree has seen better days, but the fungi thrive on it.
Make sure you know what you're doing when foraging wild mushrooms. Consult books or a professional before attempting to id or ingest anything you find. Also remember to eat only healthy samples from clean sites. Harvest sustainably!

i've heard recently some folks naming it 'a consolation mushroom' - i.e. very wide spread and very probable to find, not the best in terms of taste, but definitely something to put in the pan, if you didnt happen to find anything else this time!

in the early summer, and in early autumn its time for these shrooms to pop up everywhere! noticed these in my local yards too.
