It was 9:00 PM in Mexico City and we began to write, Mexico was hosting Panama in a match that, given the current statistics and the recent performance of the Mexican National Team, looked complicated for the 'Tricolor' team. The Panamanian team, which is already making Mexico uncomfortable in terms of points in the Octagonal table, was looking to send them momentarily to the playoff zone.

MEXICO VS PANAMA
The Mexican National Team is a team that has a clear advantage over the teams of its confederation, but in recent years, despite winning games and statistics that make the 'CONCACAF Giant' even bigger, its soccer has left much to be desired. Today, Mexico is not living its best moments at the soccer level and, as it did years ago on the road to Brazil 2014, Mexico was playing an important part of the qualification against Panama.

KICKOFF

FIRST TIME
The referee with his whistle started the ball rolling, Mexico with its people in the most mythical stadium of Mexican Soccer faced the Canal national team in the last match of this FIFA date. The team coached by Tata Martino sent a signal of attention to the public because at 5' minutes of the match Alexis Vega receives the ball a few meters from the big area who assists Raul Jimenez but in an attempt to feint ends up losing the ball by himself, Mexico was looking to open the scoreboard from the first moments of the match.
It was 11' minutes into the match and there was a foul in favor of Panama on the left side, a cross to the edge of the small area reflected the defensive problems of the Aztec team and the ball was rejected by César Montes having a double play that the Panamanian central defender, Fidel Escobar, hits with a great volley, the ball goes under the Mexican saga but Héctor Herrera with sacrifice clears the ball on the goal line. Mexico was saved and Panama left us with the clearest goal option.

Panama gradually restructured its midfield and opened up the field, gaining possession of the ball, but despite the revolutions of the match, we did not see the goalkeepers until the 27th minute of the match, when a shot by Edgar Barcenas was well blocked by the Mexican goalkeeper.

Mexico responded with a good collective play led by its two best players, Hirving Lozano broke the midfield with a good drive and left the ball to striker Raul Jimenez, the Tepeji-born player cut back to his marker with a shot with little danger that went straight into the hands of the Panamanian goalkeeper.
Panama was strong on the flanks, getting a corner kick in the 34th minute and just as in their first approach play the canaleros gave a hint of how they would try to take advantage of their set pieces as the cross was so close that the ball took the direction of the goal and in what was to be an Olympic goal Guillermo Ochoa safely rejects the ball, the play ends up being annulled for a foul on the goalkeeper.

ORIGINAL PIC

A minute after the Panamanian almost Olympic goal, the Mexican captain, Andrés Guardado, found Gerardo Arteaga in a good way, the current KRC Genk fullback sent a strong cross in front of the Panamanian center backs, despite the speed of the ball, it was a clear goal option but Raúl Jiménez missed the chance by grazing the ball.
Panama began to make mistakes in the low area and in an attempt between Carrasquillo and Godoy the player from Napoli recovered the ball to give it to Raúl Jiménez who in a small ball conduction frees his teammate Lozano the Mexican nine respects the effort to the 22 but the play is completed with a bad pass that is cut by the Panamanian goalkeeper.

It was the 39th minute when Carrasquilla held the ball in the midfield area and before the double marking he received, he placed an exceptional pass to César Yanis the number 21 of Panama did not hesitate to profile to his left leg and took a shot placed to the far post of Ochoa that to the misfortune of the team led by Thomas Christiansen grazed the right post of the Mexican goalkeeper, without a doubt Panama had the clearest chances to score.
It seemed that Mexicans and Panamanians would leave in truce the first half but for the 'Aztec' team it was not, the last important play of the first half was organized by Raúl Jiménez and Hirving Lozano, the Chucky assisted correctly to his teammate Jiménez and the Wolverhampton striker takes a powerful shot but is saved with an incredible reflex action, the play ends up being invalidated by the referee while ending the first half.

SECOND TIME
The action resumed at the Azteca Stadium and after two minutes Héctor Herrera was cautioned, but no more time was wasted before Hirving Lozano won a duel on the right flank, although he advanced the ball a little too far and the perspective seemed to be that Hirving rescued a cross and it was finished in a good way by Raúl Jiménez to score the first goal of the match. Unfortunately for the Mexicans, the play was reviewed by the VAR and the goal was disallowed as the ball went completely out of bounds.

Another continuous approach from the Aztec team. Hirving Lozano, who was having a great night, put in a good cross from the right flank received by the Mexican captain, Andrés Guardado the Real Betis midfielder despite his height, centering the ball for Jiménez to try to emulate his mythical bicycle kick goal against the same opponent 9 years ago, the ball went wide.

The problems that Mexico had presented throughout the qualification were present again today and at minute 54, the Panamanian National Team mounted a good counterattack on the left flank led by shirt number 7, the power of Rodríguez Francis left Guardado slow but before the coverage of César Montes in extremis he shot at the Mexican goal where Guillermo Ochoa saved in a fairly orthodox manner and sent for a corner kick.
At 58' Alexis Vega received the ball with his back to goal at the halfway line and in a great turn to adjust to his most skilled leg, he took a shot placed at the far post of Luis Ricardo Mejía that only went just wide, Mexico once again missed its chance to open the scoring.
At the 62nd minute, a long ball was sent to Hirving Lozano and with the speed that the play attracted, the number 23 of the Panamanian National Team displaced the Neapolitan attacker with an open arm, The referee whistles a foul in favor of Mexico, it was obvious, but Lozano could not stand up, the assistants came in and immediately attended to a sore Lozano who unfortunately had to be replaced by Diego Lainez. Chucky, after the match, suffered a dislocated right shoulder that will keep him out of the next few games with his team.

ORIGINAL PIC

The team coached by Tata Martino looked for the long-awaited goal through flanks, crosses and even long-range shots, but the best chance came in the 78th minute Andrés Guardado on a corner kick from the left side sent a cross that was barely headed by Raúl Jiménez the ball reached the feet of Diego Lainez who, in an attempt to dribble past the Panamanian defenders, protected the ball, Lainez appears to receive a blow to his left leg as he turns around. The referee decides to award a penalty kick and, although it is a complicated play and in different shots it can be decided as a penalty kick, the biggest problem, the real controversy was that the referee did not decide to consult the VAR.
That is not a problem for the Aztec striker, Raúl Jiménez is the least guilty in the controversy and given the urgency of points he takes the responsibility in the 11 steps, there was no surprise in the penalty, as usual Raúl takes the penalty in an excellent way and puts the 1-0 on the scoreboard.

Gerardo Martino wanted to make the midfield strong and with 10 minutes left on the clock, he substituted Vega for Luis Romo. Mexico, determined not to move the scoreboard any further, reinforced the defense, closing spaces and playing carefully at the back, at minute 88 Eric Davis received a yellow card when in an attempt to protect the ball, he stepped on the person who caused the penalty.
Despite Panama's need to tie the game, they could not break through Mexico's defense and it was not until the added time that Bárcenas showed an excellent individual quality, getting rid of two Mexican players on the left side and sending a precise cross to Michael Murillo, Panama's number 23 made a spectacular leap but his shot went wide. Panama did not take advantage of the last dangerous chance of the match.

The match ended and Mexico finally achieved a victory. The team coached by Gerardo Tata Martino took the three points and tied the United States team, unfortunately for El Tri the goal difference places them in third place, for the moment Canada, USA and Mexico are the teams that will represent CONCACAF in the World Cup in Qatar while Panama, in fourth place, will be looking for a ticket to the World Cup via playoffs. The next FIFA date for Mexico is hosting the United States National Team. Panama, on the other hand, will face the Honduran National Team at home.
