The end of another Call of Duty eSports Season is upon us as the last tournament of the year is coming this weekend! After an unexpected turn earlier this which forced the league to make events online instead at arenas with spectators, there has been lots of drama as the uncertainty and instability of online environments for gaming have proven to be very challenging. However, as a spectator, most of the tournaments were experienced online anyway as many cannot travel to watch the events in person.

I found the events over the year to be entertaining and while the first couple were struggles, they improved as they continued. It was also great to see how a professional league made teams make changes and adjust as the learning curve of the game proliferated among the players. We saw drastic differences in performance by teams which have made the culmination of the Championships more interesting.

While 3 of the 4 favorited teams have made it to the last weekend, the placements and games for playoffs last weekend were much closer than many would have expected. This culminated in one of the best eSports games I have ever witnessed this weekend between the Chicago Huntsmen and the Los Angeles Optic Gaming Squad. It literally went do to the wire with two players facing off in an intense one versus one fight which was stressful to even watch. If you are an eSports fan, it is truly a game to experience!

What was strange to me is that the Playoff event knocked out 8 out of the 12 teams in the league last week. This only leaves 4 teams to face off for the Champs weekend August 29th and 30th. In previous years, Champs weekend would bring many more teams which would make it a full weekend of matches to watch. However, with only 4 teams this year, we will only be seeing a handful of games. With over $4 million of prize money, at least the trend is for the Call of Duty League to continue to evolve and improve over time.
