A dream come true for any fighting and Dragon Ball lover

Many of us are the followers of Dragon Ball, we fantasized about playing, one day, a video game like the present one. It is no coincidence that in the end it was Arc System Works, creators of Guilty Gear or BlazBlue, who have ended up making the product a reality: everyone remembers the passable Dragon Ball Z: Extreme Butoden, but not many notice that the excellent SuperSonic Warriors, of Game Boy Advance and sequel in Nintendo DS, were of his authorship. Few works have understood in a 2D key the spirit of Akira Toriyama's work, and Dragon Ball Fighter Z, offering a gameplay totally different from the Nintendo laptop cartridge, shows that the aforementioned exercises were not by chance.

In many of the decisions made by the Japanese developer, her great wisdom and experience in the genre are shown. That the real powers of the anime do not matter in order to celebrate a great dream tournament between the characters of Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super is the first great decision of the team; match the mechanics of a production like Marvel VS. Capcom 3 without falling into some of the mistakes that Capcom's video game did fall into, too. They have not been very smart when it comes to announcing their reservation campaign and Season Pass, but it seems that the role model within the fighting genre is already going to be the one worn by companies like Bandai Namco, Capcom or Netherrealm. It is up to the user not to fall into these practices or to accept them meekly.

The key to production is in a great balance

In reality, the bonus content doesn't matter too much: Dragon Ball FighterZ, with its single-player game modes, its 24 fighters (plus three unlockables) and its bomb-proof online, is already a complete enough title to hook veterans and Novices in the fight, who will know how to find among their characters a team of three that adapts to their possibilities at the controls of an arcade stick. I think that the key to the production, in fact, is in a great balance that will help not very common users of the genre to do interesting things and experts to investigate in search of synergies between the different protagonists selected by Arc System Works.

However, our first step in the title will be in the story, probably one of the most disappointing sections of the product and one that is worth starting before getting into the mechanics and all its amazing technical and sound section.

Training in the gravity room

Set, hypothetically, after the events of The Resurrection of Freeza (although with the scattered timeline of all the Dragon Ball Z movies), it tells the story of a reborn Red Ribbon that has resurrected the villains of the Warriors of past ages Z, including Freeza, Cell, Nappa, or Captain Ginyu. The mystery does not end there: clones of friends and rivals have appeared all over the planet, endangering the planet. Where are our heroes? Fainted from unknown circumstances

It seems that a superior force is depleting the powers of our friends, and the only way to fight against the new threat is to link their bodies with the souls of the Dragon Ball Fighter Z players. of the adventure, and the heroes and enemies will address you as a new ally of the plot. Being inside the characters will allow us to delve into their thoughts and learn about some secrets never revealed in the manga or anime. Weird, right? I think that Arc System Works and Bandai have skidded with this decision, and that along with the extravagant context of the story a board game mode has been added, does not help.

The strongest in the world

Nothing I tell you about the graphics of Dragon Ball FighterZ will surprise you, right? Well, you are wrong: everything great that is seen in battles looks bad in the cinematics of the story mode. Clumsy animations, no scenes that go beyond conversations between the protagonists and a lack of alarming scenarios add another negative point to the already disappointing campaign. As for the fights… I only find praise to define its visualization. The capture of the most legendary moments of the series or the reinterpretations of scenes developed by Arc System Works are one success after another. That of Bills and Son Goku, for example, seems better to me than that of Dragon Ball Super itself.

The grass ripped from the ground or the dust raised when executing a special attack, the incredible animations in the three-bar attacks or the attacks themselves are a sight. The characters of the series have been transported to a video game better than ever, but the explosions or attacks, the damage that the scenario receives or the spectacular special outcomes only add a new layer of technical and graphic spectacularity to the fighting title. The same can be said of the interpretation of the in Japanese, with special conversations according to the rivals that face each battle.
The soundtrack is not bad at all: it is evident that we miss Kenji Yamamoto a lot (who put the music to the original series, the first version of Kai and video games in the category of the Butoden saga, Dragon Ball: Final Bout or some RPG of the franchise on Super Nintendo) and I think it does not live up to the themes of Guilty Gear or BlazBlue, but it is a more than passable collection of melodies with some remarkable pieces. It's a shame that Bandai Namco decided to add historical Hironobu Kageyama songs via download in the Collector's Edition, but you already know that the best way to express your disagreement is by not purchasing the downloadable content. You download the music from the options of the work and you put on your favorite album. Solved.

It could have rounded off the experience with a campaign to match, but Dragon Ball FighterZ, if anything, is an excellent product at what it should be. It is exciting, in fact, and knowing the history of Arc System Works by heart, that the proposal has an exciting future if it ends up working in sales: the Guilty Gear updates do nothing more than revolutionize the brand for the better, providing new mechanics and possibilities. to titles that seem, playable, unbeatable. If it is the future that awaits the new Goku brand, (and if they are able to follow a business model similar to that of Guilty Gear Xrd: Rev 2) we will be in luck. That FighterZ is the best Dragon Ball fighting video game ever made is the least of it; the important thing is that FighterZ is a great fighting game.
