Battle Chasers near endgame content: Grind if you want to!

in #gaming3 years ago

I have said before that I really dig the way that this game has the old school RPG elements of being turn-based and focused on story rather than kick ass cutting-edge blow your head off graphics.

The graphics are still pretty fantastic and done in a artistic fashion, but it certainly isn't trying to a graphical masterpiece.

The game is pretty linear and that would not appeal to a lot of people but when you think back to the old-school games such as Phantasy Star and Final Fantasy, even though you technically could go in a number of way, there wasn't much reason to go anywhere except what was next on your destination anyway, unless you wanted to face battles that were going to give you fuckall XP and one-hit-kill everything.

The same is true in Battle Chasers except the difference is that when you return to lower level areas, it is completely optional whether or not you are actually going to fight anything - the enemies will avoid YOU, so if you want to engage them you have to opt to do so.

The game isn't massive but in my mind it is big enough. While I have not finished the game yet, I know there is just one more area that I actually can access right now but get beat up pretty badly by the mobs that are there so we'll just take it easy for now.

This is where one of the optional aspects of the game really appeals to me: You can grind for XP to make the levels easier if you want to. I sometimes do enjoy being able to breeze through a dungeon and have been known to grind every now and then so if you want to do that, you can!

However, it isn't required at all. I remember playing some early RPG's and there weren't really any side missions, so you had to go after the main story but then at some point the enemies you would start encountering would be much more powerful than you so you had no choice but to grind. That was annoying.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar has 8 dungeons, and you can repeat them on 3 different difficulty levels as many times as you want. Of course none of this is required unless you are a completionist and are chasing that 100% trophy for your PS4 case. I only have 3 PS Network friends so I don't care about that.

Another fantastic element of the dungeon design is that if you do into one and are struggling with the enemies, your death doesn't have a huge impact on your progress. Unlike other games where the level / quest / dungeon would completely reset upon your death meaning that you have to fight everything all over again, in this game everything that you already killed, stays dead. Therefore, the aforementioned "grind" isn't necessary at all unless you want to do it. Unless you are egregiously underpowered, there is a good chance you just need to change up you strategy in said battle rather than backtrack and gain 2 levels (which, by the way, takes a VERY long time in this game.)

This is true for boss battles as well. Once you have cleared the dungeon and only the boss of said dungeon remains, there is normally a "waypoint" right outside the room you encounter the boss fight so returning to have another go at said fight is a breeze. The only exception to this is the boss in Junktown where there is a massive and time-consuming elevator leading up to the eventual battle.

Now this "dungeon reset" does not apply if you are playing the dungeons on Legendary challenge mode: If you die doing a run on that mode, the dungeon resets, but that is probably a decent indicator that you shouldn't be taking on Legendary mode just yet... you can always do that later.

On a side note this game is made by THQ-Nordic which in my mind is always a hit-or-miss company. This is one of the "hits" if you ask me.

So since this game is on sale for less than $10 still, I highly recommend it to any old-school RPG fans. Mandatory grinds in games absolutely suck but when they leave it up to the player if they want to do it or not, I kind of dig that and honestly, this is one of the better-designed RPG's I have played in recent years. There is a lot of fun to be had for the 8 dollars or so that I paid for this title and I have already spent about 20 hours on it. Very nice!
