in #gems4 years ago

Mais in Filipino also known as corn, is a cereal grain first domesticated by indigenous peoples in southern Mexico about 10,000 years ago.
It is a very popular worldwide. In the Philippines, we usually eat it by boiling it with water and adding a dash of salt.

This is a native corn variety, usually grown side by side with rice. But some farmers plant them after harvesting rice to make use of the land. Its not that sweet but definitely heavy on the stomach. Usually eaten as an afternoon snack.

In the province, corn is mixed in soups with other leafy vegetables.

Sweet corn which yellow is a variety of maize with a high sugar content. Sweet corn is the result of a naturally occurring recessive mutation in the genes which control conversion of sugar to starch inside the endosperm of the corn kernel. This is very popular snack too. Usually prefered by younger people because of its sweeter taste. It may cost 10-15 pesos each. Can be eaten either boiled, baked or grilled and is sold in the streets in the afternoon.

Sometimes, sweet corn kernels are also added in other vegetable soup recipes .

But my favorite is when the sweet corn is made into an ice cream. The sweet corn flavor is always a best seller!

A cup costs 10 pesos and is sold by an ice cream man roaming the streets carrying the ice cream flavor sweet corn in his rolling three wheeled bike.

Whole corn, like you eat on the cob, is considered a vegetable. The corn kernel itself (where popcorn comes from) is considered a grain. ... This is why several foods people think of as vegetables are actually fruits, like tomatoes and avocados. So, corn is actually a vegetable, a whole grain, and a fruit.

Corn is a vegetable , a fruit, a mid afternoon snack and a favorite ice cream flavor !
