Getting to know the firefighters from the inside
Saludos Comunidad Hive, en mi primera publicación, la autobiografía, expresé que ahondaría en el tema bomberil, el área de la psicología o acerca de salud y seguridad ocupacional, ya que son los temas que me apasionan y que he ido transitando en mi vida laboral.
Cumpliendo con esa promesa iniciaré con el área bomberil y haré un brevísimo recuento de qué hacen los bomberos y bomberas.
Greetings Hive Community, in my first publication the autobiography, I expressed that I would delve into the firefighter topic, the area of psychology or about occupational health and safety, since these are the topics that I am passionate about and that I have been going through in my working life.
In keeping with that promise, I will start with the firefighting area and I will give a very brief account of what firefighters do.
Por lo general, muchas personas piensan que el trabajo bomberil es solo apagar fuego. De ahí que muchas personas nos llamen los come candela, etc. Sin embargo, esa es una de las múltiples áreas laborales que se realiza en esta institución. Los bomberos cuentan con departamentos especializados para llevar a cabo la prestación del servicio a la comunidad. Algunas de estas áreas son las siguientes:
In general, many people think that firefighting work is just putting out fires. That is why many people call us the "fire eaters", etc. However, this is one of the many areas of work performed in this institution. Firefighters have specialized departments to carry out the service to the community. Some of these areas are the following:
Supresión de Incendios: son los bomberos que se encargan directamente de la extinción de los incendios.
Hablamos de incendios porque existe una clasificación de los distintos tipos de fuego según el tipo de material que se esté quemando. De manera que existen Fuegos Clase A (materiales orgánicos: papel, cauchos, madera, etc.), Fuegos Clase B (derivados del petróleo), Fuegos Clase C (equipos eléctricos energizados), Fuegos Clases D (sustancias reactivas) y Fuegos Clase K (son fuegos producidos en chimeneas de las cocinas debido a la acumulación de grasas, aceite, manteca).
Se hace esta clasificación porque dependiendo del material que se quema el fuego tiene un comportamiento determinado y por otra parte, las acciones a realizar para su extinción varían de acuerdo a las características de estos materiales.
Fire Suppression: are the firefighters who are directly responsible for extinguishing fires.
I say fires, because there is a classification of the different types of fire according to the type of material being burned.
So there are *Class A Fires* (organic materials: paper, rubber, wood, etc.), *Class B Fires* (petroleum derivatives), *Class C Fires* (energized electrical equipment), *Class D Fires* (reactive substances) and *Class K Fires* (fires produced in kitchen chimneys due to the accumulation of grease, oil, lard).
This classification is made because depending on the material that burns the fire has a certain behavior and on the other hand, the actions to be taken for its extinction vary according to the characteristics of these materials.
Rescate: los bomberos rescatistas se ocupan de extraer a las personas o cadáveres que se encuentran atrapadas en espacios confinados o de difícil acceso. Estos espacios pueden ser vehículos, ascensores, estructuras colapsadas o lugares inhóspitos como el caso de montañas, selvas o ríos, lagos, mar, etc. Las personas a ser rescatadas pueden estar lesionadas o no, desorientadas o perdidas; igualmente, aquellas personas que intentan cometer suicidio.
Rescue: Firefighter, rescuers are in charge of extracting people or corpses that are trapped in confined or inaccessible spaces. These spaces can be vehicles, elevators, collapsed structures or inhospitable places such as mountains, jungles or rivers, lakes, sea, etc. The persons to be rescued may be injured or not, disoriented or lost; likewise, those persons who attempt to commit suicide.
Emergencia Prehospitalaria: el personal que labora en esta área cuenta con ciertos conocimientos médicos que le permiten realizar maniobras prehospitalarias a fin de estabilizar a las personas con múltiples traumatismos o lesiones, heridas, quemaduras, asfixiadas, ahogadas, entre otras, de manera que gracias a estas acciones se salvan muchas vidas.
Prehospital emergency: personnel working in this area have certain medical knowledge that allows them to perform prehospital maneuvers to stabilize people with multiple traumas or injuries, wounds, burns, suffocation, drowning, among others, so that thanks to these actions many lives are saved.
Prevención e Investigación de Incendios: en esta área se realizan actividades encaminadas a lograr evitar o mitigar la ocurrencia de situaciones adversas que generen incendios, explosiones, fugas de gases, etc. Igualmente, en caso que sucedan estas contingencias se realizan estudios e investigaciones a fin de determinar el origen y las causas de estos eventos adversos, con la finalidad de establecer medidas que impidan o minimicen la posibilidad de que vuelvan a ocurrir.
Fire Prevention and Investigation: In this area, activities are carried out to prevent or mitigate the occurrence of adverse situations that generate fires, explosions, gas leaks, etc. Likewise, in the event that these contingencies occur, studies and investigations are carried out to determine the origin and causes of these adverse events, in order to establish measures to prevent or minimize the possibility of their recurrence.
Materiales Peligrosos: este servicio refiere a la atención de eventos en donde se produzcan escapes o derrames de sustancias toxicas, asfixiantes o corrosivas. Los bomberos que laboran en esta área buscaran eliminar la fuga o derrame, neutralizar o aislar el material peligroso.
Hazardous Materials: this service refers to the attention of events involving leaks or spills of toxic, asphyxiating or corrosive substances. Firefighters working in this area will seek to eliminate the leak or spill, neutralize or isolate the hazardous material.
Formación Técnica y Universitaria: la organización bomberil venezolana cuenta con una institución universitaria en donde se forman los futuros bomberos, egresando con títulos a nivel de técnicos superiores o licenciados en Ciencias del Fuego, Rescate y Seguridad o Emergencia Prehospitalaria. Los futuros profesionales bomberiles cursan sus estudios en la Universidad Nacional Experimental de la Seguridad durante un periodo de cuatro años.
Technical and University Training: The Venezuelan firefighting organization has a university institution where future firefighters are trained, graduating with degrees in Fire Science, Rescue, and Safety or Prehospital Emergency. Future firefighter professionals study at the Universidad Nacional Experimental de la Seguridad for a period of four years.
Los Cuerpos de Bomberos están conformados por hombres y mujeres que brindan sus conocimientos, habilidades y competencias en pro de prolongar la vida de aquellas personas, que estén en alguna situación de peligro o que les impida valerse por sí mismas.
Estas acciones muchas veces se realizan a costa de la vida de los mismos bomberos; sin embargo, el compromiso con la comunidad es salvar vidas.
En las próximas publicaciones comentaré acerca de qué es el fuego y que hacer en caso de presentarse esta emergencia.

Fire Departments are made up of men and women who offer their knowledge, skills and competencies in order to prolong the lives of those people who are in a dangerous situation or who are unable to fend for themselves.
These actions are often performed at the cost of the lives of the firefighters themselves; however, the commitment to the community is to save lives.
In the next publications I will comment on what fire is and what to do in case of an emergency.
