Hiking Pinckney Island in Hilton Head, South Carolina

A few weeks ago, I was in the Hilton Head, South Carolina area and went out for a day hike on Pinckney Island, a national wildlife refuge just over the bridge from Hilton Head. There are miles of hiking paths with marsh views and alligator inhabited ponds throughout the island.

There was also an abundance of interesting birds that you see as you hike. These storks posed nicely for their portrait.

The paths are either flat gravel or grass so it made for an easy hike for people of all abilities. You will also enjoy all the beautiful Spanish moss hanging from the trees. You’ll see my painting of this photo later in the post.

The tidal marshes were a beautiful golden color. I’m not sure if they were that color because of the season or whether they stay that color year round. You’ll see my painting of this photo later in the post also.

It was very tropical looking with the palmetto trees and the sawtooth palms that you will see around the island.

My friend and I hiked about 10 miles that day and we didn’t get to the end of the island. With the sun starting to drop and our wives wondering where the hell we were, we decided to turn around and head back to the car.

We saw quite a few runners and bikers on the island. The flat trails would be very easy for a family bike outing and you would be able to see more of the island than on foot.

I posted my oil painting “Pinckney Island Path” the other day, but I’ll post it again here along with one I did of one of the marsh views. I hope to use more of my photos for painting inspiration in the coming weeks.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this post as much as I enjoyed my day on Pinckney Island.

What a nice place, the photo of the storks was great, do you know how to draw birds? You could make a painting of them

I have not tried painting or drawing birds yet, but it might make and interesting painting. Thanks!

It should not be easy, but I'm sure if you dare it will look very good, your landscape paintings are great.

Thanks for the vote of confidence! I just passed my one year anniversary of taking up painting.
