The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Genesis 29, Post #4

in #hebrew2 years ago (edited)

Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Genesis 29:14-20

Leban wants Jacob to stay. So they are coming up with a proper wage for his labor and Jacob offers seven years of labor for Laban's younger daughter. Laban agrees, saying that he could not think of a better man for his daughter.

You may think you just saw the sale of a woman, like human trafficking or something, but all marriages even dating back only a few hundred years were worked out between the bride's father and the groom. Have you every heard of a dowry? It is like that but opposite. A dowry is a collection of valuables that a woman would keep from her teens with a plan to bring it with her into the marriage.

A wedding contract of old, was a price paid to the father who is losing a daughter - when a price was agreed upon, then the wedding could be planned. Jacob was empty handed and decided to pay with his muscle.

What if the price doubles after payment was made?

Today in America, traditional weddings are paid for by the father of the bride who will no longer have to support his daughter.

All is in the eyes of the beholder as to what is a correct price for given service. Consistency, like a man who never misses work, is valuable.

... and Laban said to him, "Surely you are my bone and my flesh!" And he stayed with him a month.
Then Laban said to Jacob, "Because you are my kinsman, should you therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me, what shall your wages be?" Now Laban had two daughters. The name of the older was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. Leah's eyes were weak, but Rachel was beautiful in form and appearance. Jacob loved Rachel. And he said, "I will serve you seven years for your younger daughter Rachel." Laban said, "It is better that I give her to you than that I should give her to any other man; stay with me."
