The Bermuda Triangle is a mythical area of the Atlantic Ocean roughly surrounded by Miami. According to News, dozens of ships and airplanes have disappeared in this location. Some very disturbing events have occurred in this section of the ocean. Example of these accidents is one where pilots of a battalion of U.S. Navy bombers became lost while flying access the area; their planes were never discovered. Cases of planes and boats that have seemingly disappeared from the area in favorable weather condition without sending distress messages. Although myriad fanciful theories about the Bermuda Triangle did not prove that these mysterious disappearances occur more often there than in other sections of the ocean. In fact, people navigate the area every day without incident.

THE LEGEND OF THE BERMUDA TRIANGLE.

The Bermuda Triangle otherwise known as The Devil’s Triangle, covers not less than 500,000 square miles of ocean almost off the southeastern tip of Florida. According to Christopher Columbus who sailed through the sea on his first voyage to the New World reported that a massive flame of fire crashed into the sea one of the nights and then a peculiar light shone in the distance few weeks after the incident.

Some scholars have assumed that, William Shakespeare’s play “The Tempest,” was based on a true life experience of Bermuda shipwreck, and this has likely increased the area’s aura of mystery. Reports of most unknown disappearances where not taken too serious by the public until the 20th century.

An especially egregious incident took place in the year 1918 March precisely, when the 542-foot-long Navy cargo ship (USS Cyclops) with the capacity of 10,000 tons of manganese ore and over 300 men onboard, sank somewhere between The Chesapeake Bay and Barbados. The Cyclops didn't sent out a distress alarm even when they were equipped to do so. Following their disappearance, an extensive search found no wreckage. U.S. President Woodrow Wilson later said "Only God and the sea know what happened to the great ship,”. As if that was not enough, in 1941 two of the Cyclops’ sister ships vanished without mysteriously almost the same route.

BERMUDA TRIANGLE THEORIES AND COUNTER-THEORIES.

The phrase “Bermuda Triangle” was coined by author Vincent Gaddis in 1964, mysterious accidents had occurred in that part of the ocean. Three passenger planes that went missing even after sending “all’s well” messages. The grandfather of Charles Berlitz stoked the legend with a sensational bestseller in 1974. Since then, there have been increase of same paranormal writers who have blamed the incident of on everything from aliens. But more scientifically minded theorists have taken note of the waterspouts, magnetic anomalies, huge eruptions of methane gas from the ocean floor.

There is no theory that have successfully solved this mystery. Trying to find a common cause for every Bermuda Triangle loss is no more logical than trying to discover a common cause for every motor accident in Nigeria. I know storms, reefs and so on can cause navigational problems, but maritime insurance manager Lloyd’s of London does accept the assumptions that the Bermuda Triangle may be a hazardous place.

I'll be showing us more theories about this mysterious Ocean in my next post.
