En pleno corazón de La Habana, en el barrio del Vedado, se erige el edificio Arcos, un inmueble que se construyó dentro del hueco de una furnia y que soporta sobre sus columnas la vejez de casi un siglo de antigüedad.
Hace pocos días caminaba por esos parajes, y aunque sabía que en ese lugar está ese inmueble, jamás me detuve a tomarle unas fotos. Esta vez, tenía tiempo y pude saciar un deseo que palpitaba desde hace años.
Arcos: a building that breathes like a ferret in a hole
In the heart of Havana, in the Vedado neighborhood, stands the Arcos building, a structure built within a furnia and whose columns bear the weight of nearly a century of age.
Just a few days ago I was walking through those parts, and although I knew that building was there, I never stopped to take pictures. This time, I had the time and was able to satisfy a desire that had been nagging at me for years.
Según comenta uno de sus habitantes, el edificio cuenta con 71 apartamentos, los que se han deteriorado mucho con el paso del tiempo.
Tiene varias escaleras que se continúan con pasos elevados, que sirven como arterias para unir los extremos del edificio. Los que dan acceso entre la calle 19 entre E y F y la calle 21. Deambular por estas zonas es caminar por una cuerda floja, donde no hay garantías de seguridad por el mal estado de las estructuras de concreto.
Las cavillas oxidadas y expuestas son manifiestas, como rieles de un tren. Otras han reventado y cuelgan como flechas en posición vertical.
According to one of its residents, the building has 71 apartments, all of which have deteriorated considerably over time.
It has several staircases that connect to elevated walkways, which serve as arteries linking the different sections of the building. These walkways provide access between 19th Street between E and F and 21st Street. Wandering through these areas is like walking a tightrope, where there are no guarantees of safety due to the poor condition of the concrete structures.
The rusted and exposed rebar is prominent, like railroad tracks. Others have broken off and hang vertically like arrows.
Los aquitectos del proyecto se las ingeniaron para aprovechar el espacio para proyectarlo, conociendo los desniveles del terreno, cuyos cimientos se enclavan en un sustrato de piedra caliza.
Han pasado los años y se mantiene en pie el edificio por su base sólida. No obstante,las inclemencias ambientales, el impacto del salitre por la cercanía al litoral costero, y la edad, pasan siempre factura.
Por ese motivo, si no se hacen mantenimientos y reparaciones cada cierto intervalo de trae como consecuencia que el daño sea cada vez peor.
The project's architects cleverly utilized the available space, taking into account the uneven terrain, whose foundations are embedded in limestone.
Years have passed, and the building remains standing thanks to its solid foundations. However, the elements, the impact of the salty air due to its proximity to the coast, and the inevitable passage of time are taking their toll.
Therefore, without regular maintenance and repairs, the damage will only worsen.
Se observan escaleras interiores y largas columnas, que sirven para aguantar el peso de los niveles superiores, los que se muestran agrietados y en muy mal estado.
En ocasiones han ocurrido derrumbes parciales, y el miedo se apodera de las personas que ahí viven.
La vegetación sí ha sabido imponer su presencia desde su base, cubriendo con su lindo verdor y escalando entre las grandes rocas que encontramos en la furnia, para aportar al entorno una belleza natural, aprovechada por una diversidad de roedores, insectos y reptiles.
Interior staircases and tall columns supporting the weight of the upper levels are visible, and these levels are cracked and in very poor condition.
Partial collapses have occurred on occasion, and fear grips its inhabitants.
Vegetation has managed to establish itself from the base, covering the area with its lush greenery and climbing among the large rocks of the furnia, adding a natural beauty to the surroundings, which is enjoyed by various rodents, insects, and reptiles.
Es un lugar que me despierta grandes contrastes. Por un lado, su arquitectura única, su magia, una atmósfera de misterio y las historias que, sin saberlas, fluyen con el aire del entorno.
Por otra parte, la tristeza y la incertidumbre de ver que las personas que ahí habitan mantienen sus vidas girando en una ruleta rusa, donde no saben qué día podrá ocurrir un desplome mayor, que pueda fulminar con su integridad psicosomática.
Incluso, sin vivir ahí, el solo pararse o caminar por las escaleras y pasillos te hace sentir vulnerable.
It's a place that evokes strong contrasts in me. On the one hand, its unique architecture, its magic, an atmosphere of mystery, and the stories that, unbeknownst to anyone, seem to float in the air.
On the other hand, the sadness and uncertainty of seeing its inhabitants living in a constant and unpredictable whirlwind, never knowing when a major collapse might occur that could shatter their very existence.
Even without living there, simply standing or walking through the stairwells and hallways makes you feel vulnerable.
Si detallan en mi última foto, tras esas ramas que yacen a la izquierda, se agrupan muchos relojes contadores de electricidad, como si se tratara de celdas de un panal de abejas. No imagino cómo la persona encargada de leer los registros de electricidad cada mes pueda meterse en ese recinto.
A pesar del deterioro reinante, mi mente navega al pasado, y puedo apreciar la belleza de ese inmueble cuando se inauguró. Sus ventanales variados con forma rectangular o con arcos superiores, sus 3 pasillos principales externos con pasamanos hechos de metal con dibujos y diseños de hierro, dejan manifiesto el esfuerzo humano para mostrar el arte en los detalles de su diseño.
If you look closely at my last photo, behind those branches on the left, you'll see a cluster of electricity meters, like cells in a honeycomb. I can't imagine how the person responsible for reading the meters each month manages to get into that enclosure.
Despite the prevailing decay, my mind drifts back to the past, and I can appreciate the beauty of this building when it first opened. Its various windows, some rectangular and others with arches at the top, and its three main exterior walkways with metal handrails adorned with intricate ironwork, clearly demonstrate the human effort invested in showcasing the mastery of detail in its design.
En fin, se me ocurre que es un lugar ideal para filmar una película de terror, donde interactúen seres elementales y espíritus que vibran con distintas frecuencias, influyendo directamente en las acciones de los seres que ahí radican y duermen.
Si se dedicara tiempo y una gran inversión para arreglarlo como se debe, algo que sabemos que suena a ciencia ficción en nuestro presente, el lugar mostraría otra cara. Podría relucir con un hermoso restaurante rodeado de una atendida vegetación abrazando a esas rocas naturales; una cascada artificial que impacte a un estanque acanalado, con carpas japonesas de varios colores; mientras el imponente edificio Arcos sería el eje central de las miradas, de la composición visual de muchos fotógrafos, pero sin nunca perder ese halo de misterio que lo caracteriza.
In short, it occurs to me that this is the ideal location for filming a horror movie, where elemental beings and spirits interact, vibrating at different frequencies and directly influencing the actions of those who live and sleep there.
If time and significant investment were dedicated to its proper restoration—something we know sounds like science fiction these days—the place would reveal a different facet. It could shine with a beautiful restaurant surrounded by lush vegetation that embraces the natural rocks; an artificial waterfall cascading into a channeled pond with colorful koi fish; while the imposing Arcos building would be the focal point, the subject of many photographers' compositions, without ever losing that aura of mystery that characterizes it.
