Hornets on a bee hive
When I was at one of my apiaries, I saw an interesting as well as strange behaviour of hornets sitting in large numbers on a bee hive (Mini-Plus system for breeding).
My first impression was that they were biting through the plastic hive. In retrospect and watching the video again, however, I tend to conclude that they were more interested in sugar residues at the transition to the feeding hive.
Nevertheless, this is a behaviour I have not observed before. I know that in May and June, hornets take bees in front of the flight hole to feed - and sometimes become victims of a bee attack themselves. But the fact that hornets can be found in such large numbers among the bees in mid-September is new to me.

Hornissen auf einer Bienenbeute
Als ich auf einem meiner Bienenstände war, sah ich ein interessantes als auch seltsames Verhalten von Hornissen, die in großer Anzahl auf einer Bienenbeute (Mini-Plus System für die Zucht) saßen.
Mein Erster Eindruck war, dass sie sich durch die Kunststoffbeute beißen. Im Nachhinein und beim erneuten Schauen des Videos komme ich aber eher zum Schluss, dass sieh eher an Zuckerresten am Übergang zur Fütterungsbeute interessiert waren.
Trotzdem ist dies ein Verhalten, das ich bisher noch nicht beobachtet habe. Ich kenne eher, dass Hornissen sich im Mai und Juni Bienen vor dem Flugloch zum Fressen holen – und manchmal dabei selbst zum Opfer einer Bienenattacke werden. Aber dass Hornissen Mitte September in so großer Zahl bei den Bienen zu finden sind ist mir Neu.

Ja – normal würde ich dir recht geben; aber die Kiste war leer – da waren nur alten und entleerten Waben drin. Vielleicht hing aber etwas Zuckerwasser an den Zargen. Und was auch mysteriös ist, dass man so viel Hornissen Mitte September antritt. Normalerweise sterben die Hornissen im Herbst alle bis auf die Königin.
Hornissen habe ich auch schon in Bienenkästen und Vogelkisten gesehen. Aber nicht im September - 1. kalte Nacht und alle Hornissen und Wespen sind im Elysium bis auf die Königin
