Abendpfauenauge ■ Eyed hawk-moth
Smerinthus ocellata (Linnaeus, 1758)
Das Abendpfauenauge ist ein Nachtfalter aus der Familie der Schwärmer (Sphingidae). Der Falter fliegt bevorzugt in Flussnähe. Dort findet man auch die Futterpflanze der Raupe. Sie frisst vorwiegend an schmalblättrigen Weiden. Der Falter ist mit einer Flügelspannweite von über 80 mm eine imposante Erscheinung. Am Tag sitzt er gut getarnt an Bäumen und wird erst in der Nacht aktiv. Dann fliegt er im Schwirrflug von Blüte zu Blüte und saugt mit seinem langen Rüssel Nektar. Er fliegt von Mai bis Juli in einer Generation.
The Eyed hawk-moth is a moth from the Sphingidae family. The moth prefers to fly near rivers. There you can also find the caterpillar's food plant. It feeds mainly on narrow-leaved willows. With a wing span of over 80 mm, the moth is an impressive sight. During the day it sits well camouflaged on trees and only becomes active at night. Then it flies from flower to flower and sucks nectar with its long trunk. It flies from May to July in one generation.

Schwärmerraupen kann man an dem Analhorn gut erkennen. Dieser ausgeprägte Stachel ist aber völlig ungefährlich und kann nicht stechen, wie man vermuten könnte.
The Eyed hawk-moth caterpillar can be easily recognized by their anal horn. But this distinct sting is completely harmless and cannot sting as one might assume.

Meine nachfolgende Aufnahme zeigt den Vergleich, zwischen der männlichen und der wesentlich größeren weiblichen Puppe. Sie unterscheiden sich deutlich in Größe und Gewicht. Die Puppe, überwintert und der Falter schlüpft ab Mai.
My following picture shows the comparison between the male and the much bigger female pupa. They differ clearly in size and weight. The pupa, hibernates and the butterfly hatches in May.

Each photograph reveals so much detail that it's surprising. The moth, between light and shadow, is observed in 3D. The fascinating chrysalis, I did not know about its sizes, even nature is wise in those marked differences. Greetings from Venezuela.
