Blaues Ordensband ■ Blue underwing

Catocala fraxini (Linnaeus, 1758)

The blue underwing is a moths from the family of Noctuidae. With a wingspan of up to eleven centimeters, this moth is one of the largest moths in Central Europe. Its preferred habitat are the edges of deciduous forests, usually near water. The night-active moth likes to suck on tree sap or rotten fruit. With some luck it flies to artificial light sources.

During the day, it sits with closed flights at tree-trunks. Because of the structure and unspectacular colors he is hardly to be discovered there. So it is well protected from predators. The female lays her eggs preferably on aspen (Populus tremula). However, other deciduous trees can also be colonized. The egg hibernates and from May the caterpillar hatches. It feeds on the leaves of the forage plant. The pupation takes place between leaves spun in a cocoon.

The moth flies from July to September in one generation. If disturbed, it shows its blue undergarment. Unfortunately, the specimen I have shown is already missing a feeler. This probably fell victim to a predator. Also in any case I was very happy about this gigantic moth. Unfortunately, this juggler of the night is already endangered in many regions of Germany.

Its a great camouflage about the moth while sitting on tree, its counting down due to predator, and its gift of nature.

It is very nice camouflaged. Your photos are perfect!

Many thanks for your great compliment 😀

Butterflies are not only a gift from nature, but also valuable for the entire ecosystem. They are food for numerous other insects and especially for the birds whose young need proteins in spring. Without the many caterpillars, they could not survive.

Amazing bro!

Thank you 😀
