I cant really say messi has not tried. The only reason why i want to support your prediction is because messi won some individual award to himself. He was the highest goal scorer in laliga and Copa America.
Apart from this messi also won the award of the highest assist in both tournament above couple with the South America tournament cup won by is national team. With this i think he deserved it. Kante would have been the person i will predict for this but he did not do well in euro 2020 just like he did in UEFA Champios league.
