La extraña temporada 2009 — The strange 2009 season

in Sports Talk Social3 years ago

Thinking back to some memories of my childhood as a Formula 1 fan, that strange 2009 season comes to mind. A sort of transition between two eras of Formula 1, one that ended in 2008, and another that began in 2010. I don't want to discredit the championship achieved by Jenson Button, but it is clear that it was a somewhat disruptive season for what Formula 1 had been until 2008.

The last Grand Prix of the 2008 season ends in Brazil. Massa wins with Ferrari and was champion for a few seconds until Hamilton (McLaren) wins a position at the last moment to become champion. It was one of the most dramatic finishes in the top category. Personally, I was looking forward to the 2009 season to witness Massa's rematch, and to see the Brazilian driver become champion with Ferrari. But things changed radically the following year.

Although I was somewhat aware of the changes that would be implemented in F1 for 2009, I never imagined that this would mean that the strongest teams until 2008 (Ferrari and McLaren) would take a back seat. In other words, these 2 teams that had struggled to win races were now barely competing for top 10 finishes.

On the other hand, the 2009 cars were, in general, not as visually appealing as the previous seasons. The new regulations had drastically changed the aerodynamic configuration. The Formula 1 cars went from looking like spaceships to smooth cars with very high rear wings. Only a few cars I found really attractive, like the Ferrari and to a lesser extent the Red Bull, but especially the Toyota TF109, that car was really beautiful:

Being still too young to appreciate other aspects of racing, all these changes were a bit of a disappointment to me. I remember that when Schumacher retired from Ferrari a few years earlier, it took me a while to get back into Formula 1, as he was my favorite driver at the time. Seeing less visually appealing cars, and "strange" teams winning races and getting on the podium, to be honest, I stopped watching many races that season, or watched them only in summary.

The Brawn GP team emerged from the sale of the Honda team, which had been a team with poor results in 2008. To everyone's surprise, Brawn GP, led by Englishman Button and Brazilian Barrichello, started out as the fastest car of all, winning many races until Jenson Button won the world title. The Red Bull team, which had been a mid-table team until 2008, became the second force behind Brawn GP. And this has been repeated a few years later, as Brawn GP became Mercedes.

I had been following the BMW Sauber team since 2006, which advanced little by little to the point of taking several podiums from Ferrari and McLaren in 2007 and 2008, with a victory for Kubica in Canada. I had hoped that in 2009 this team would stop going under the radar and start to stand up to the top teams. But rather they went backwards on the grid, being affected in the same way as McLaren and Ferrari. Their new car left something to be desired visually, compared to that of 2008:

The start of the 2009 season became even more unusual when in the fourth race held in Bahrain, the Toyotas managed to achieve the 1-2 in the Pole Position. They had a really solid car and were set to win the race. Although Jarno Trulli could only finish 3rd in the race, it was something almost unthinkable until 2008 when they were a team with decent results. Unfortunately it was Toyota's last year in the top category, they had a fast and visually appealing car in 2009.

Massa and Räikkönen were getting better and better results with Ferrari as the season progressed, achieving several podiums and a victory for Räikkönen in Belgium. Unfortunately, one of the most memorable F1 accidents of this century occurred. In the Pole of the Hungarian GP in 2009, Massa was hit in the helmet by a suspension that came off another car, leaving him unconscious. The Brazilian was able to recover but missed the rest of the season. He returned to drive the Ferrari in 2010, but was never the same driver again.

In short, the sport is like that and there will always be changes in the dominant teams. The current Formula 1 derives from the changes implemented in 2009. This season marked a change among the top teams, and it is something that is necessary from time to time. Today I would see with different eyes a season similar to 2009, not only to see other teams winning races but also because I would appreciate more things that I did not appreciate during that singular season.

Finally, in case there are any doubts about the "visual appeal" of the cars in that season, this was the Renault team's car in 2009, the R29:

This was the year Mercedes entered and took them a few years to get the car set up with Schumacher's help coming out of retirement in 2010.

Yes, Schumacher's help to set up the car was crucial for Mercedes.

Saludos!
