It is such a beautiful thing having Zack Wheeler on this team. The guy is a weapon. A premier starting pitcher like him is fairly rare nowadays and having him on the team payed off in a big way last night. He threw seven scoreless innings of baseball, just wonderful. Can't ask for much more!
It was Wheeler's 100th career win to secure the Phillies' 80th win of 2024!
Trea Turner homered last night, but he's really the only star that produced offensively. Edmundo Sosa hit a bomb and newcomer to the team Austin Hays also had a heck of a game gathering two hits and was even robbed of a homerun thanks to nice defense by the Braves.
This win helped maintain a nice six game lead over the Braves in the NL East with a month to go, this will be hard for the Braves to overcome. A win tonight might just seal the division for the Phillies!
Meanwhile though, the Brewers are right behind the Phillies in terms of seeding for the playoffs. If the Phillies fall to the third seed, then the Phillies may indeed have to see the Braves in the playoffs. Besides just seeing the Braves, the Phils would rather not have to play in the Wild Card round at all!
But yes overall, things are looking good for the Phillies. Another ace hits the mound for the Phillies tonight in Aaron Nola. Would love to see Nola put the final nail in the coffin for the Braves' hopes of catching up in the division!
Should be a clear nice day to kick off September in Philly.
