Both Getafe and Atletico Madrid intended to get their 2022/23 LaLiga season off to the best possible start. Last season, Getafe emerged just one point outside the relegation zone, and they would be hoping they aren’t in a similar predicament this season. Atletico was 15 points behind champions Real Madrid last season, and indeed the anticipation this running season is that they mount a more severe championship assault.

Mayoral, who has joined Getafe on a permanent contract this summer, started while both Angileri and Domingos Duarte made their debuts for the club.

GETAFE (5-3-2): David Soria; Juan Iglesias, Djene Dakonam, Stefan Mitrovic, Domingos Duarte, Fabrizio Angileri; Carles Alena, Nemanja Maksimovic, Mauro Arambarri; Borja Mayoral, Enes Unal.

SUBS: Gaston Alvarez, Jaime Mata, Jaime Seoane, Portu, Angel Algobia, Diego Conde, John Patrick, Gorka Rivera, Moi Parra, Alejandro Revuelta, Alejandro Rodriguez, Vicente Bellmunt.

Diego Simeone has encountered Getafe 19 times as a manager in LaLiga without losing (W-17, D-2), his most incredible unblemished record against a single opponent in the championship. He wanted his record to grow robust. In powering up his strategy, Griezmann found himself on the bench, whereas Morata and Felix started up front for Atletico. Both Witsel and Molina made their debuts for their new club tonight.

ATLETICO MADRID (5-3-2): Jan Oblak; Nahuel Molina, Stefan Savic, Axel Witsel, Reinildo, Saul Niguez; Marcos Llorente, Koke, Thoms Lemar; Alvaro Morata, Joao Felix.

SUBS: Ivo Grbic, Geoffrey Kondogbia, Rodrigo De Paul, Antoine Griezmann, Matheus Cunha, Angel Correa, Renan Lodi, Yannick Carrasco, Mario Hermoso, Antonio Gomis, Marco Moreno.

Atletico saw most of the ball, but the home team's rigid 5-3-2 structure wasn’t allowing anything to go through. It's still pretty early - they couldn’t hold on much longer. It seemed like Joao Felix was in a different frame of mind that day. He was only warming up.

That didn't take long! Atleti spotted the loopholes and exploited them. They won the ball back in midfield. It was Felix, with the assist in only a quarter of an hour, who was ready to chuck his defender off and push the ball to Morata's boots. A significant piece of dexterity from the youngster! Morata’s left-footed shot found the bottom left corner, giving the invaders the advantage.

It was pretty stop-and-start thus far in the latter half, with plenty of tactical fouls and sloppy play. Cholo’s men needed to stay calm if they intended to capture these three points and start their season off with a triumph. Getafe had been seeking to exploit the right-hand side, targeting Niguez and Reinildo, and it's paid so far.

At the last minute of the last quarter of the first hour, it's the Felix-Morata partnership again. Getafe lost the ball in such an exciting place, and it's a huge error. Felix answered brilliantly and handled the ball swiftly to ensure the potential was not squandered. Felix passed it towards Morata, who slammed the ball into the ceiling of the goal.

Felix with a hat-trick of assists tonight, including a stunning through-ball to feed Griezmann. He grabbed the ball slightly outside the box, took a few touches to get more central, and somehow managed to fire the ball between two defenders to score. Yes, here it is. Finally!!! Oh, God!! Finally!! Griezmann scores for his club. Since November, he didn’t manage to execute what he did best. I hope he will be on a roll. Though I am not someone who supports him for his clubs as a Madridista but witnessing someone like him struggle would make any football enthusiast heartbroken.

But that day, it was all about the brilliant performance of Joao Felix.

It isn’t delicious at all to remark how Messi and only Messi constantly make huge profits from Media. No denying he is one of the finest but to make him the G.O.A.T media does the rest. I still remember how the internet went wild when he managed to produce a hat-trick of assists with a team that I can’t identify despite being a football freak. The media exalt him as something exceptional that can be described by any means. I have no issue with it. The supporters may celebrate their hero the way they want, but Media can’t be prejudiced all the time.

This outstanding performance of Joao Felix is going unappreciated as the media is busy covering their favorite star’s ass after he missed out on the top thirty nominees for Ballon d’Or and had one of the worst first-season performances when it’s come to monstrous salary bills.

Diego Simeone continues to make Atletico competitive against all odds. I hope they win the league this season after failing to defend it the last time out.

He is the most expensive manager in the world for a reason. I would love ATM to be competitive but as a Madridista my eyes want to see the league trophy end up in Bernabeu.

Well, as a neutral, I've always loved competitive leagues. A three-way battle for the league will be interesting. We've not had Real, Barca and Atletico going for it all at once in recent times. It's always been two teams, or just one strolling to the title like Madrid did last season.

To be honest I also want Madrid to face challenges. LaLiga is going stronger and stronger. Sevilla is a solid team as well as Villarreal. Valencia is already on the way of rebuilding under the Mighty Gattuso. I hope title race this season would be interesting.

I hope the traditionally tough teams like Villarreal, Valencia and Sevilla can get back to being really tough to beat. Their presence means La Liga won't be decided by whatever happens in the Clasico.

Yes, that's what we all want. To be honest, LaLiga is underrated compared to EPL. Barcelona drew against Rayo, and Madrid lost many times against the relegation zone teams. Villareal won Europa. Cucurella was an outcast who seemed to be a star in EPL. It's all media doing. The title race is always between two teams in EPL for the last few seasons.

If the EPL was that great their top teams will win the Champions League every single year. What they have compared to other leagues is a very functioning media. EPL is the most watched league in the world, every one is talking about them.

I do enjoy Bundesliga matches compared to a lot of EPL matches, but very few people outside Germany watches the German league.

Javier Tebas has done well with the way he marketed the El Clasico. Losing Messi and Ronaldo definitely affected the league.

Altough I am not the biggest fan of Simeone, his work is undeniable world class. It is really nice to see how a coach and his mentality can keep a ship on track against all odds.

This is why he is the most expensive manager in the world. He has developed more players than Guardiola. He doesn't spend big except for Joao Felix. But he is worth every penny.

To be honest, Joao Felix performance was under-appreciated and under rated, that would not have been the case if he was an English player ( or one of the big guns in the footballing world today). Love the fact that you pointed that out.

Glad that you enjoyed my piece.

Hope this season he stays fit and fire up LaLiga. United is after him 🌚. Let's see what transpires.

I just had a look at their substitutes bench, and all I see is quality and depth. I'm tempted to tip them to finish above Barcelona

That's right but Barcelona have some serious depth in every position except for the Right Back. If Barca finds there rythm that would be a nightmare. But again despite being a Madridista I want a sizzling trophy hunt.

Yeah, Barca look a very strong team. Bit I think by the time they gel and start playing as a unit, they might have fallen too far behind the big boys.

I also have a soft spot for Madrid, but where's the fun if one team streamrolls to the trophy

We are on the same page brother. I also want LaLiga to get more sausy.

Cheers 🥂 to a more saucy LA liga then 🍻
