Once a football season has ended or is near its end, there is always an important debate to have regarding who was the best player. There are several individual trophies that attempt to recognize the best player of the season, but the Ballon d'Or is the most popular and prestigious one. This trophy was joined together with FIFA's individual trophy for a while, but after a few years they got separated and today, once again, we have Ballon d'Or by France Football and the individual trophy known as "The Best" by FIFA. They basically award the same thing so it might look redundant to some people.

There is another important individual trophy created by UEFA called "UEFA Men's Player of the Year Award", and it awards the best player that participates in UEFA competitions. Since pretty much all the good players play in European clubs, this trophy is almost the same as the 2 I mentioned before, however, it doesn't take into consideration the World Cup nor the Copa America.

Historically, the Ballon d'Or is an individual recognition that tended to change winner every year but in the last decade, there was an exception with Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. They ended up winning 11 Ballon d'Ors, 10 of those in a row. During 10 years we only had 2 winners of this individual trophy and never in history has this happened before.

Having only 2 players as candidates might get boring after a while, and this year when I started to think about it I concluded there were at least 7 candidates to win this trophy. I will discuss their merits and arrange them in order from the least favorite to win to the most likely to win in my opinion. In total, I chose 7 players for this discussion.

Benzema has been Real Madrid's best player since CR7 left the team. He has been the top scorer and the main attacking player. However, it won't be a surprise for people to know how Benzema plays that he isn't enough to keep Real Madrid as a dominant team. Even though he has improved his performance he isn't able to compete with the top-scoring strikers from other teams. However, I decided to include him in the list for several reasons.

First, it was thanks to him that Real Madrid was able to compete for the Spanish league until the last match. They didn't win this tournament but were very close. In the Champions League, the team reached the semifinal which is not bad, and again, Benzema was very important for this. Reaching second place in the national league and semifinal in the Champions League isn't enough to win the Ballon d'Or of course, but there is still one tournament where he can shine, the UEFA Euro.

If Benzema becomes the best player of France, the top scorer and the absolute star, which is not easy at all, and if they win the tournament, I guess this player would have a chance to win the Ballon d'Or. It won't be easy because there are other candidates to win the Ballon d'Or in France, but it is not impossible for Benzema to become the star of the team. Personally, I believe Mbappe will be the star but thought it was fair to include Benzema as the least likely winner of the 7 players on the list.

CR7 didn't have a world-class performance this year. Juventus only won the Italian Cup, they lost the league even though they were the favorites ones, and in the Champions League, they were disappointing. CR7 finished as the top scorer in the Italian league with 29 goals but he was far from winning the Golden Boot, which is an individual trophy delivered to the top scorer in European leagues.

Just like in Benzema's case, CR7 doesn't have enough merits to win the Ballon d'Or if we only take into account his performance in Juventus. However, if in the UEFA Euro he becomes the best in the tournament, and if Portugal wins it, then I guess he would have a chance to win the Ballon d'Or. I believe he will be the best of Portugal but I don't think they will be able to defeat France, so it is unlikely for CR7 to win the UEFA Euro and the Ballon d'Or but not impossible.

Messi is in a similar position as CR7. He won the Spanish cup, but Barcelona was a complete disappointment in the Spanish league and in the Champions League. He finished the season as the top scorer in the Spanish league with 30 goals, but just like CR7, that wasn't enough to win the Golden Boot.

Messi would need to be the best player of Copa America, win it, and then hope for France to not win the UEFA Euro because there are so many Ballon d'Or's candidates in France that if they win the UEFA Euro the winner of the Ballon d'Or will most likely be French. If the UEFA Euro winner isn't France, then Messi could have a chance if he wins Copa America and becomes the best player in the tournament. I believe Brazil is the favorite to win Copa America but if Messi gets inspired Argentina could defeat anyone.

Lewandowski was the best player of last season but sadly for him, due to the pandemic France Football decided to not give any new Ballon d'Or, and instead, they gave recognitions to some historic players. He did receive the FIFA "The BEST" award and the UEFA player of the year trophy, so he at least got recognized as the best but the Ballon d'Or is the most iconic and prestigious recognition and he didn't get one.

This year it is unlikely for him to win because he didn't win the Champions League and it is very unlikely for Poland to do anything important in the UEFA Euro. He won the German league, was the top scorer, and he won the Golden Boot, which is very important because the German league only has 34 matches, unlike the 38 matches in all the major European league. This means he scored more goals in fewer matches than any other striker. He also surpassed a historic top score record in the German league, the record was 40 goals but Lewandowski now changed it to 41.

Winning the national league, being the top scorer with a national historic record, and winning the Golden Boot could be enough to win the Ballon d'Or. However, the most important trophies this season are the Champions League as always, as well as the UEFA Euro and the Copa America. He didn't win the Champions League and will most likely not win the UEFA Euro so this reduces his chances of winning the Ballon d'Or by a lot. I think he would need a surprise winner in both summer tournaments to have a chance.

If France or Portugal win the UEFA Euro this would give plenty of reasons to several French players or to CR7 to win the Ballon d'Or. If Brazil or Argentina win the Copa America, this would give Messi or Neymar arguments to win the Ballon d'Or. So, Lewandowski is in a difficult spot and he requires major surprises in the 2 tournaments that are about to begin next week.

Neymar has been a candidate to win this trophy for several years but he hasn't won it so far. He is always getting injured before important matches, and this has been a huge problem in his career so far. Last season he was absolutely great but his team PSG lost the Champions League final against Bayern Munich and his chances of winning the Ballon d'Or that year went to zero.

This season Neymar only won the French cup, they didn't win the league even though they are the favorites to win it. They are one of the 2 state clubs in Europe and only winning a cup isn't enough for PSG. In the Champions League, they lost in the semifinal against Manchester City. So far in this season, Neymar doesn't have enough merits to win the Ballon d'Or, but if he becomes the best player in Copa America and wins it, then he might have a chance.

Like other players in this list, I think Neymar will also need for the UEFA Euro to have a winner different than France because if France wins, then a few French players will have more arguments for the Ballon d'Or than Neymar even if he wins the Copa America. Even if the UEFA Euro winner is Portugal I think Neymar could have some arguments over CR7 for the Ballon d'Or but it would be tough competition for both of them for sure.

I do believe Brazil will win Copa America, but I don't think Neymar will win the Ballon d'Or because, in Europe, I don't see any team capable of defeating France. This is why the 2 players that are the most likely to win the Ballon d'Or this season are the 2 French players below.

Mbappe is the top scorer of PSG and one of the main stars of that team along with Neymar. These 2 make a great duo and they have won a lot of trophies together but this year only winning the cup was very disappointing. Mbappe was the top scorer of the French league with 27 goals.

Mbappe is the best young player in the world, and I believe he and Haaland are going to be the best in this decade, and certainly the best goalscorers for years to come. What Mbappe needs to be a candidate for the Ballon d'Or is to win the UEFA Euro. France is the number 1 favorite to win this tournament but he also needs to be the best of his team and being the top scorer of the tournament would be of huge help as well.

I do believe Mbappe can easily achieve a top 3 position in the Ballon d'Or, but achieving position #1 will be extremely hard because one of his teammates in France has even more arguments in his favor.

If you don't recognize the Chelsea player in the picture above that's because he is a defensive player and not a goalscorer or anything like that. He is a defensive midfielder who plays for Chelsea and France called N'Golo Kanté.

The reason why I think he is the most likely winner of the Ballon d'Or are the following ones:

He won the Champions League with Chelsea, and he was the best player in both the semifinals and the final. He always plays well and is the reason why Chelsea has been so solid in so many important matches. He completely dominates the midfield, and is of huge help when defending but sometimes even when creating attacking plays by giving good passes and assists.

Kante will probably be just as important for France in the Euro so if they win, this would help Kante's chances of winning the Ballon d'Or by a lot because he would have won the 2 most important trophies for European players, the Champions League and the UEFA Euro. As I have mentioned several times, Mbappe is another French player with chances of winning the Ballon d'Or so if they win the UEFA Euro, I guess their performances would have to be compared to see who was the best. However, comparing a striker with a defensive midfielder isn't an easy task.

Mbappe will have the goals and all the attention for being a great attacking player, but Kante will be the one providing stability in the midfield and he won the Champions League with his club while Mbappe only won the national cup which is a minor trophy. In short words, I believe Kante has the edge so far thanks to his Champions League victory and for being the best player in the semifinals and final.

Si no reconoces al jugador del Chelsea en la imagen de arriba es porque es un jugador defensivo y no un goleador ni nada por el estilo. Es un centrocampista defensivo que juega para el Chelsea y Francia llamado N'Golo Kanté.

Las razones por las que creo que es el ganador más probable del Balón de Oro son las siguientes:

Ganó la Champions League con el Chelsea y fue el mejor jugador tanto en semifinales como en la final. Siempre juega bien y es la razón por la que el Chelsea ha sido tan sólido en tantos partidos importantes. Domina por completo el medio campo, y es de gran ayuda a la hora de defender, pero a veces incluso a la hora de crear jugadas de ataque dando buenos pases y asistencias.

Kante probablemente será igual de importante para Francia en la Euro, por lo que si gana, esto ayudaría mucho a las posibilidades de Kante de ganar el Balón de Oro porque habría ganado los 2 trofeos más importantes para los jugadores europeos, la Liga de Campeones y la Eurocopa. Como he mencionado varias veces, Mbappé es otro jugador francés con posibilidades de ganar el Balón de Oro, así que si ganan la Eurocopa, supongo que habría que comparar sus actuaciones para ver quién fue el mejor. Surprisingly we don't have a clear favourite this has there were some disappointment in the top 4 leagues.

If I'm to pick as at now, I'll use the uefa champion League as a yardstick. So will be rooting for ngolo Kante has he was the better performer.

Good we still have the euros, after all is set and done. We will have more contenders

Yeah, the Euro and Copa America will be the defining tournaments. Since France is in my opinion, the favorite to win the Euro, I believe Kante and to a lesser degree, Mbappe, are the players with more chances of winning this individual trophy.

Yeah maybe mbappe too. He had good season too

Depsite being a Manchester united fan,to me this is the most prestigious individual award in the world of football and coming to the winner this year ,with the big list out there,to me the only deserving candidate for this award is no other person to than Ngolo Kante of Chelsea football club,he deserved to win it base on his contributions and performance in both league and Europe this just concluded season,so am giving it to kante

Agree. So far he is my favorite but I still give some chances to Mbappe if he becomes the best in the UEFA Euro and wins it. It is a tough decision but so far I think Kante is the better choice.
