With the new European super league competition causing havoc, it is safe to say that the clubs are standing up to take power from the football body and that may cause doom or be rewarding to the football lovers. The ideology behind a new club football tournament is great as it has shown progression at one end and at the other end screams desperation.

A lot has been said on the emergence of the new tournament and although so far. With views from everyone who are football inclined to drop their down there 2 cents on whether the idea of the new tournament is welcomed or not. From clubs’ presidents to football fans, to UEFA heads and a whole lot of pundits and analysts have a say on the issue.

As a sports lover, I have something to say about this new tournament also has its starting to cause a rift between football clubs and football governing bodies. I must say that this new tournament is been birth in other to have more power and of course to drive more money for the teams. The success of this ESL will likely increase the flow of funds in football and the teams partaking in it particularly.

Money will always be a factor behind this stuff and it's sure the big teams are quick to switch allegiance. It also brings about more self-governance i.e., more power to the teams and most especially the individuals involved. The opportunity for football clubs’ owners to be stakeholders in a big tournament can never be passed away and that is also a key factor why the European super league is likely to go through.

The part where the tournament succeeds is another ball game entirely and it rests on the numbers of teams that will likely turn out and join the super league. At the moment, the occurrence of this present tournament seems to be in major doubt as some teams have pulled out by making their stance clear that they are not interested. Why this is a big set back for the ESL teams who have made the badge seems adamant to go on without the support of others.

According to charts of the revenue made last year by the team around Europe, it showed that 11 of the 12 teams which have already joined the European super league were among the 14 teams to have made more money over the course of the 2019-2020 season.

  • AC Milan
  • Arsenal
  • square Atletico
  • Chelsea
  • Barcelona
  • Inter
  • Juventus
  • Liverpool
  • Manchester City
  • Manchester United
  • Real Madrid
  • Tottenham

The ESL is expected to shoot the revenue generated by the top clubs but at the moment, numerous clubs seem to be pulling out at an alarming rather. At the time of writing, it has been confirmed that all six English teams have dropped out. While this might bring about a set back to the commencement of the tournament for now but the ESL will still hold sometime in the future.

The main reason for the ESL initiative is because the big boy feels underpaid and used and they have all rights to feel so. during the Covid period, UEFA kept on ranking the funds while the big clubs suffer in a big way. UEFA felt less concerned during this period and now, the top boys wanna retaliate through the ESL initiative.

WHO ARE THE GROUP WHO TENDS TO LOSE MORE IF THE EUROPEAN SUPER LEAGUE INITIATIVE GOES THROUGH?

A lot of people/ groups has got a lot to lose if this had worked out and in no order of how this will hit, the list presents who the realisation of this idea will hit the most;

  • FIFA
  • UEFA
  • Sponsors such has Heineken
  • Smaller clubs
  • Some fans also

It might not look like much but going deep into this list will reveal that the FIFA and UEFA governing body will lose their stronghold on the governance of some clubs. It might likely make them irrelevant and that might lead to the death of the establishment. Also, funds might become hard to come by making the organisation unable to run and will likely shut down.

Some loyalist sponsors of the UEFA and FIFA body will not be able to easily adjust or get another sponsorship role with the new league. They will miss out badly and that might likely affect their trade and business in return. Of course, the European super league will need sponsors and with money one of the reasons for the creation, it is likely that the ESL asks for more money than UEFA will ask for.

The UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE will also lose its fragrance and many people will ditch the competition for a more attractive one such as the ESL. Clubs may not want to even play in the champions league again as the rewards they likely achieve won't be substantial in value.

The Europa league might likely collapse too because teams that are supposed to be playing in it are now playing in the champions league and that a big off too. Some small clubs too will be affected has even after having a good season, their team won't get to play at the highest club competition (ESL) as only big and wealthy clubs will get the nod first.

WHAT ESL MIGHT HAVE LIKELY BRING TO THE TABLE

While the creation might have been on the purpose of making more money and being in power, the merit of the initiative might have likely grown the game more but results in more baiseness. They are two sides of a coin and the ESL, in particular, has two sides to its own coin.

The clubs get richer and the footballers get richer too. Advancement in stadiums structures and better pay to other staffs. Better health equipment to keep players sharp and fit. It will be all-around development in all regards but then greed and power intoxication might likely occur.

The supposed president of the ESL which is Perex even mandated that no club which has signed is allowed to leave the tournament and with the six English teams leaving, it remains to be seen the next possible line of action which ESL will take.

WHAT HAPPENS NOW AS SIX ENGLISH TEAMS BACKS OUT OF THE ESL?

Well, that might put the project at an abrupt end or maybe a pause but the fact remains that for this initiative to be actualised, the football clubs must be in solidarity with a voice. Also, the six English clubs which ditch ESL will face sanctions from both UEFA and ESL as they have contracts signed with both bodies.

UEFA president has also said that the sanctions of the English clubs will be much lesser than the rest of the ESL founding members due to the fact that they pulled out first. other founding member clubs might likely be punished with not being able to play in the champions league for the tournament season. the thoughts are still proposals with no concrete actions in place.

my take on the whole issue

The ESL was a great initiative that might have actually helped spiced a lot of things up in football. Truth be told, the Champions League is becoming tiresome and almost predictable year in year out. the level of competition isn't what it used to be and it is being to make football kind of boring. Truth be told I have been enjoying the English premier league to champions league for a while and it shows how the competition is failing.

The way the ESL was announced was wrong and the whole formation wasn't done through the right channel and will likely encounter pron=blems in the very short run of its existence.

I will love to know what you think on this issue

Sort:

This is all about the money. There is only so much money in football and fans will struggle to add more matches to their schedule. I know a few years ago you needed a good $300 p/m just to go to home matches and that would have increased by now. Football fans are not wealthy and you can only milk them so much.

I agree with your assertion, no one gives a dam about the football fans, they just care about milking them through tickets to matches

It is the same with American sports. The prices keep going up to attend sporting events (even more so now with limited seating due to COVID). This in spite of the broadcasting rights constantly going up.

This is a sad state of affairs across the world. Sports are big business, the fans just customers. I am sure it was always that way but it is now taken to the nth degree.

Yea and its one of the biggest issues. But I think there is probably a bigger issue with the SPORTS community going woke. On top of raising prices, you have to sit through a bunch of opinions that you might not agree with.

Yes the customers also have limitations. If they raise prices, then the fans can only take so much before they stop going. Its the same thing going on with streaming services. They are increasing the costs of subscriptions to make up for the lost fans.

It's all about money. A lot of these clubs have enormous debts like Barcelona. But they do pay tens of millions for one player.
The ESL would have been a disaster for all other European clubs.

The salaries are recognizing the talents of players yet it is forcing the less well funded teams into a corner. They cant compete for the best players so they have to pay up for less players.

It is a lose-lose situation for them.

Messi is a really talented player, but a salary of 71 million euro a year!?
No player is worth that amount....

Barcelona is paying this, but is also almost bankrupt. It's absurd I think.

Sure the numbers are absurd. In the US, we have Lebron James making over $40 million a year just in salary, not including endorsements.

The problem is that someone will pay these guys and it increases the market for them.

it is true that bigger clubs would have benefitted more but I feel that it might also help save football has a lot of top clubs are in big debts and might likely not be able to settle this debt in years to come thereby affecting the clubs and football in general.

These clubs shouldn't spend money they don't have for players. The salaries are ridiculous.

that's true. I once wrote a post on football clubs being just a front for money laundering. some clubs are thriving well despite these huge salaries being paid. i have doubts with clubs paying this big amounts. it will lead to their liquidation soon just as it affected some clubs such as QPR and Anzhi in the past

I believe the super league would be good for football because otherwise, the only strong teams will be clubs owned by states. Normal clubs won't be able to compete with them. There has been a lot of rejection of the idea of the super league, but if nothing changes, a lot of clubs will go bankrupt very soon and the football industry will be severely affected.

I believe so too. I think the super league idea might be revisited in the not so distant future

That is true across most sports sadly.

The team with the most money tends to be winners, even in leagues that try to spread things out. This is nothing new but it seems to be getting worse. We see the players leave their teams for the "greener" pastures presented by another team's wallet.

Unfortunately money has always been the deciding factor. The fans have definitely lost their voice but there is only so much you can do when the team owners are all in it for the money. They don't mind weakening their team for money and they enter/leave leagues for the money. I can't really say much since the team owner is the one who paid a ton down for the team but the fans themselves don't really boycott them. So the situation just continues.
