Good Day to all Splinterlands players! (and people of HIVE! ๐) I've made it a point to blog about my weekly progress and experiences in Splinterlands/HIVE in my "weekly diary". Splinterlands & HIVE are what I'd consider to be my entry point into the World of Crypto, and I intend to use this as a means to look back on the path I've taken in the years ahead.โณโณโณ
This is now the 31st consecutive week writing in my Diary (of sorts) detailing my Splinterlands Journey ever since I started this game. Of course, this also marks my 31st weekly giveaway! ๐๐ฅณ๐
In a matter of about another 4 days, the 2nd End of Season for the "new revamped Reward changes" will commence upon us. I have actually been trying to find the best strategy of playing (of sorts) for my own time/limits available. Season 1 saw me playing my Main account in Silver 1, but grinding Gold Daily Focus Chests, and my Alt account (also) in Silver 1, but grinding out Silver Daily Focus Chests. In both of these accounts last season, I rented only once every 2 days and burned up to 50% ECR each time.
This would result in me "saving" on half the rental throughout the season, yet I would take a hit in the number of daily chests gained each day. The same would go for the RShares points for the End of Season Chests.
I decided to tweak things again this season and have (so far) been renting everyday and draining my ECR at a rate of 25% daily. The league and chests parameters have remained the same, and I'm getting slightly more chests, but not significantly so. I'm still not too sure if the current route I'm following is more worth it than the previous one though. I get slightly more chests, but spend significantly more in rentals everyday.๐ค๐ค๐ค
Regardless, I am eager to see the final results when I tally them come the end of season. ๐๐๐
My quest for that elusive Gold Foil Legendary from my rewards chests continues on though ๐ค๐ป๐๐ค๐ป๐๐ค๐ป๐ (It's a 0.008% chance, at base level, to pull a legendary gold foil, in case you were wondering ๐). I'll get there some day (i hope).
No week goes by in Splinterlands without some news event happening though. And here's my pick of some of the most interesting ones in my opinion. ๐ฐ๐ฐ๐ฐ
๐๐ฐ๐Upcoming Changes to the new Ranked Reward System๐๐ฐ๐
Just as I thought I was getting used to the new Rewards system, Splinterlands has once again announced yet ANOTHER tweak to the system ๐คฆ๐ปโโ๏ธ๐คฆ๐ปโโ๏ธ๐คฆ๐ปโโ๏ธ.
Let's just cover the 2 CHANGES that will be implemented come the next maintenance window on Tuesday, June 28th. (More changes are planned further down the road, but we'll cross that bridge when it arrives ๐)
Daily Focus Chests Based on Current League
The daily focuses will be changed to award chests based on the player's league at the time that the focus begins rather than the highest league achieved during the previous season.
This is interesting, and will mean that I will no longer be able to grind out the gold chests whilst playing in Silver 1. However, I'm already feeling that this isn't the most efficient way of farming at all and that I would be better served in the Gold League. At the high ratings in Silver 1 League (about 2.8-2.9k - which is actually a Gold 1 rating), I'm meeting really strong opponents who're aiming for the leaderboards.
This change is ostensibly to prevent people from getting a newbie alt account who finished in Bronze the previous season, and then delegating/renting a bunch of strong cards to play in Silver and above. This results in an inordinate number of daily chests from just a single win. I've heard of people getting hundreds of chests each day this way. ๐ฑ๐คฏ๐ค
I think this is a positive change overall, but I'll wait to see the changes live before I fully make up my mind. ๐ค
Starter Card RShares Reduction Formula Change
- Currently, the starter card reduction is applied to the overall Rshares earned. For example, a player with a rating of 1,000 and using 1 starter card out of 4 would earn 750 Rshares as shown below:
- The Splinterlands team however, feels that this formula is still overly generous and not incentivizing card ownership and renting as much as they want it to. ๐จ The starter card reduction will instead be now applied to a player's rating in the equation. With this change, the same example above will now result in approximately 421 Rshares instead of the previous 750:
Personally I doubt this affects most players who're actually playing as they intended. Almost everyone I know has rented a full deck of cards and reaped the rewards from doing so. Once again, I would agree with this change as it would mainly penalize bots/players trying to leech whatever amount they can.
More card ownership should be encouraged and it will push the prices up in the long term. ๐๐ป๐ฐ
Weekly Chaos Legion Sales Tracker
And now, for an update on the number of Chaos Legion packs sold thus far. About 45k sold since last week. Still not too bad. That is still quite an amazing sales figure! ๐

For the reward changes, I fear we are in a chasing-our-tails cycle. Will a brand new player have the ability to rent a whole starter deck, and if so the ability to play it well enough to advance in the game thereafter? If so, the advancement amount can be farmed. If not, a new player's prospects for advancement are hampered. And it always comes back to that very fact. If it's not possible to farm, how can a new player advance?
I have come to think the only way to really address these issues is to really address them. The problem, the real problem, is that low level accounts drain more equity out of the game than they put in. The formula for earnings should be based on equity put into the account vs. equity withdrawn. At low levels withdrawing equity and not advancing would have a severe impact on rewards and less so as you level up. At some point, an account could withdraw unlimited equity, but before that point there would come a point where the account could no longer earn rewards. So in effect, yes, you own what you earn. Yes, you can always withdraw it from the game. But if you are not keeping assets to advance in the game, then the game will stop rewarding you before you can drain the game.
Just my two cents, and probably exactly what they are worth.
It's almost definitely a given that all the changes they've made since months ago (it started with the nerf to was it Novice or Bronze 3? not earning DEC), has been to combat the multitude of bots running on starter cards. So I definitely do not fault the team for going in this direction.
The unfortunate side effect is that genuine new players might have a steep slope to climb.
However, as in any traditional TCG (I've been playing MTG 2 decades ago), one has to invest cold hard cash into building a deck. So in that sense, yes you're right. The game intends to reward people who've put in a commensurate amount, and I definitely have no problem with that.
Do I have a solution to the entire problem? Probably not ๐คฃ, else my services would be in demand among lots of P2E companies.

I do think the intentions are totally good, and I am glad they are trying to deal with problems. I think they are taking on one specific way value has been drained. And not at all in an unreasonable way. But I just also think the bar will be moved higher again inevitably, when say all the bots rent a least expensive but profitable deck. Naturally the profits are just drained from the system because that's what the ill-behaved bots have always done.
Time will tell how it will all shake out. Especially in light of the upcoming wild/modern changes which will greatly benefit new players, too.
And really, what I would like most is for it to reach a stable point where we are all not just waiting to adjust to the next change.
Guh. . . I'll have to read more to make sure I understand the (additional) nerf to Starter cards, but it paints a rather disappointing picture. Splinterlands has a critical flaw in its overall design where NUX (new user experience) is concerned, as a steadily widening chasm has appeared to block the way.
Think of it like this: You start a game for the first time and see that after playing a dozen or so games, you earn a few cards. They're all commons, but it's progress all the same. This incentivizes continued play by establishing an expectation that players will be rewarded for playing. This is so common to collectible games that it's not unreasonable to expect the same from Splinterlands.
Splinterlands defies this process by instead giving new players the impression that you can't earn anything. You spend money to play, then you use the cards you "bought," and you're massively penalized for doing. Nobody likes spending money on a game only to immediately realize it wants you to spend more money almost immediately. Worse yet, I guarantee you some players don't even bother to look past the "-100% RP" penalty to see what caused it.
They just quit.
Fingers crossed Splinterlands figures out this grave oversight by introducing some way for new players to progress within the game without feeling pressured to spend on top of spending.

I agree with that the new user experience would be rather daunting. The "starting curve" has definitely increased from when I started just 6 months ago.
However, I do understand where they're coming from too, with tons of bot accounts in bronze just grinding it out with starter cards. And from a botter's perspective, even a 1 dec profit is worthwhile as they can go on and on all day with zero effort.
I think what Splinterlands has to do is make the entire game appealing as a GAME on it's own. So less play2earn emphasis in its marketing/adverts and more of a focus on it's appeal as a TCG.
