El estrés: Aprendiendo a identificarlo [ESP-ENG]

Stress: Learning to identify it

For some time now the term stress has become very common in our vocabulary. Sometimes a variety of questions have elicited the same answer: "that's stress". Hearing it so often I thought it was something common that happened to certain people. As sometimes I also thought it was simply the "buzz" word. But then I recognized that the frequent use of the term must have a reason. That motivated me to do some research on the subject and I learned that it was real and much more serious than I had imagined. I read that it was a normal reaction of the body to various difficult situations. Also that there is good stress, which in many cases helps us to act promptly; and bad stress that keeps us in a maximum state of constant alert and affects the body in unimaginable ways.

At first I thought that this had nothing to do with me, that stress would pass me by since I have always considered myself a calm person. Too calm, one of my sisters would say. In fact, one of the phrases I commonly use is "zero stress". But by going deeper into the information I was able to see myself better. I realized that my inner calmness had partly turned into a "stress reservoir". I have had manifestations that prove it to me. For example, the insomnia I sometimes suffer, something that is strange in me because I am a person who gets up early every day and that should influence the fact of a good sleep. Another thing that generates stress for me is to postpone important activities which makes them accumulate generating more stress. It's like a circle.

I remember one time my son-in-law, my daughter, my youngest son and I were walking around a shopping mall. We wanted to eat ice cream and we went to the place where they sold them. We placed our respective orders and when we were about to pay, suddenly some shots were heard. Then the girl closed the store and took our ice cream and our card. At that moment we saw people running towards us. I admit that this situation made me overreact. My son-in-law and daughter-in-law accelerated their pace but acted with equanimity as they looked for a place to take shelter. I later learned that my youngest son was in a clothing store, calmly waiting for us to buy ice cream. But I was screaming desperately for him. When I looked into the parking lot, armed security officers were on their way.

I panicked and kept screaming, imagining that we would be caught in a shootout. My daughter lovingly and patiently calmed me down and assured me that everything would be fine. As we stayed protected I was able to see my son inside the tent safe and sound. I think that was by far one of the most stressful episodes I have ever experienced. Thank God things did not escalate as the agents were able to control the situation and everything returned to normal. We ate our ice cream, got our card back and then went home. What a moment! Now every time we look back on it we laugh out loud. I thank God that I have been able to identify the situations that generate stress in me and thus take an interest in finding ways to cope with it and calm it down. Something that helps me a lot is reading. I love reading. Looking at the sky and finding shapes in the clouds also gives me a sense of tranquility.

Another very comforting activity is talking to people about uplifting and positive topics. Also, when I write about different topics, it's like opening a faucet through which the torrent of stress flows. So I am very grateful to the Emotions and Feelings community that allows me to respectfully, responsibly and thoughtfully express a world of innovative and rewarding ideas and life experiences. After all I have to acknowledge that stress is not a buzzword, no. It is a reality that we must face every day. It is a reality that we must face on a daily basis, especially in these critical times we are living in. But it is a good thing that we have the necessary and appropriate tools to calm stress. And also with dear people who with much love contribute to it, making us feel as peaceful as the one we breathe in a sunny beach with calm waters.
