“Experiencing Ainu Culture at Upopoy, Shiraoi, Hokkaido, Japan
Previously I went to the Indigenous Ainu cultural center called “Prika Kotan” in Shiraoi, Hokkaido, Japan a long time ago. This year, I went to the new one called “Upopoy” which relocated to near the JR Shiraoi station. “Pirika” means beautiful and “Kotan” means village in Ainu language. Upopoy means “singing together in a large group” in Ainu language. I love both of the names but the new name Upopoy perfectly fits the new facility.
I really enjoyed exploring the new Ainu cultural center with my mother this time. She also visited the old one for her honeymoon many moons ago. I really wanted to visit Shiraoi this time because it’s near my father’s hometown. We used an express train from Sapporo and it was very comfortable and fast. Everything was so fascinating there. I enjoyed traditional Ainu food, stitching, experiencing music, dancing, story telling, culture, and more. I wish I had more hours to spend. Definitely, I want to go back someday again. When you visit Hokkaido, I definitely recommend you to visit here!
北海道の白老ウポポイで体験するアイヌ文化”
何年も前に北海道白老のピリカコタンというアイヌの方達の文化博物館のある施設を訪れたことがあります。今回は北海道を訪れた時に、JR白老駅の近くに新しくできたアイヌの施設ウポポイを訪れました。「ピリカ」はアイヌ語で美しい、「コタン」は村という意味です。「ウポポイ」はアイヌ語で「大勢で歌うこと」という意味合いです。どちらも素敵な言葉ですが、新しい施設はウポポイという言葉がぴったりな場所でした。
今回は母と一緒にすっかり楽しく過ごしました。母はもうずいぶん昔にウポポイの前のピリカコタンに新婚旅行で訪れたそうです。父の故郷の近くである白老には今回ぜひ行きたかったのです。札幌駅から特急に乗ったのですが、快適で早かったです。全てにおいて素晴らしい施設でした。わたしはアイヌの伝統的な食事、刺繍、音楽、踊り、伝承物語、文化などなどを存分に楽しみました。時間が足りなかったです。絶対また行きたいです。北海道に行く方はぜひともウポポイを訪れてください！
Access: Just one hour from Sapporo and 40 minutes from New Chitose Airport. I used the express train from JR Sapporo station. It took only a few minutes on foot from the JR Shiraoi station.
札幌から約1時間、新千歳空港から約40分の好アクセス。わたしはJR札幌駅から特急に乗りました。JR白老駅から徒歩で数分でした。
Once entering the facility, you see a big beautiful space which takes you ancient Hokkaido time. There are traditional Ainu houses called “Chise” in front of Poroto lake.
一度広い施設に足を踏み入れると、北海道の昔の時代にタイムスリップしたような気持ちになります。「チセ」とよばれる伝統的な家々がポロト湖の前に立ち並んでいます。
There are many interesting traditional things inside of the Chise. You can try traditional plays. You can also hear traditional story telling called “Yukar.” The lady in the picture said that her grandmother couldn’t speak Ainu language much because her grandmother’s parents told her grandmother that they should speak Japanese instead to survive. The lady learned Ainu language by herself with elders and through audio listening again and again. Her story was beautiful.
チセの中には伝統的な物がたくさん展示してあります。伝統的な遊びも体験できます。アイヌ民族に伝わる叙事詩の総称であるユーカラ (yukar) を聞くこともできます。女性がユーカラを語ってくれました。彼女のおばあちゃんは両親が生きぬくために日本語を覚えた方がいいとアイヌ語を教えてくれず話すことができなかったため、彼女もアイヌ語が話せなかったそうです。独学で先輩やオーディオを使用して何度も何度も聞いて物語を覚えたそうです。素晴らしい物語でした。
There were beautiful traditional carvings and dresses with a beautiful stitching in the building. You can learn and try stitching, carving and so on. You have to book to learn them. I did stitching. I made a coaster using Ainu traditional clothes and thread. It was very fun and free! Teachers and staff were very kind.
建物の中では伝統的な彫り物や刺繍が展示してあります。彫り物や刺繍などを学ぶことができます。体験には予約が必要です。わたしは刺繍を体験し、特別な布と刺繍糸でコースターを作りました。とっても楽しいのに無料でした！先生方やスタッフの皆さんもとても親切でした。
Cafes and restaurants are just outside of the main entrance. You can get re-entry permission cards there. I wanted to eat traditional Ainu meals. I selected the cafe RIMSE because they have a big outdoor tables. You can also try cooking courses inside of the facility if you like. I had the Cep Oahu set with millet rice, salmon soup called cep ohaw, rataskep (means mixed things), tea, and more. Delicious!!! I want to try other restaurants as well.
カフェやレストランは施設の外に隣接しています。メインの入り口で再入場カードをもらいます。アイヌの伝統的なご飯が食べたかったのです。外に大きなテーブルがあったのでカフェリムセにしました。施設内では料理体験にも予約して参加できます。わたしはチェプオハウセットを注文しました。鮭の汁物、「混ぜるもの」という意味のラタシケプ、お茶、などがセットになっていました。美味しすぎです！！他のレストランでも食べてみたいです。
I wanted to play the traditional instrument called “tonkori” but the schedule didn’t match with me, unfortunately. I watched Kamuy Eyes instead. It was a beautiful 3D theater. Also, I watched a beautiful dancing stage. I couldn’t videotape it because it is their traditional dance. I attached some video below so, you can feel their songs and dance.
伝統的な楽器「トンコリ」を弾く体験をしたかったのですが、スケジュールが合わず今回は断念しました。そのかわりにカムイアイという素敵な３Dシアターを観ました。さらに、歌と踊りの素晴らしいステージも観覧しました。伝統的な踊りのためにビデオ撮影はできませんでしたが、下にいくつかビデオを貼りましたので、体感できると思います。
There is a big beautiful museum. It’s free but you have to book in advance due to COVID-19. It is a very organized beautiful museum. There were Jomon history sites and modern Ainu artists’ sites. It was fun to watch.
大きな素晴らしい美術館があります。入場無料ですがコロナ対策のために前もって予約が必要です。素晴らしい展示物が揃っています。縄文文化の歴史から現代アイヌアーティストさんのコーナーもあって充実しています。とても見応えがありました。
There is a souvenir store in the museum. There are some stores outside of the facility as well. There is a lot of cool art work.
美術館の中にはお土産屋さんが入っています。施設の外にもたくさんお土産屋さんがあります。ステキなアート作品がたくさんあります。

Reading your post gets me so interested in Ainu culture! I hope I could go to Hokkaido and experience this all.
Please visit there sometime when you have a chance! Akan(Kushiro) is also good place to visit. I want to visit there again:)
