No Freedom In Freetown

Good day my people. I just feel like relating my experience of yanga dey sleep, trouble go wake am today here. I had set out early to meet an appointment at Ikeja today. On getting to the garage where I would board a bus to that part of Lagos, the immediate bus had been filled up, I became the very first passenger in the next bus, so I took the front seat. I wasn't happy at first but I calmed after a little while accepting it to be my fate for the day. A little time later, our bus got filled and we moved.

The first police checkpoint got me amazed. The first bus that had gone ahead of us had been held captive. Our bus was halted too. So, we had to park behind the bus the had gone ahead of us. Everyone was bothered and we began to ask for reasons why the bus was halted by the policemen. Some naughty responses started flying here and there. First, the policemen were asking for an increment from #100 to #200 of passage toll that commercial buses would pay each time they drive pass that check point. I went berserk upon hearing this.

It wasn't like any misconduct or driving ethics was broken by the driver neither did the bus missed any document required by the government. This was the height of a corrupt system I thought.

One thing that flashed my mind immediately was that we are still nursing the injuries of the #ENDSARS protest and yet the police have not turned a new leaf even after that experience. Since no one wanted to cause more trouble, we stood there for over two hours waiting for the next action. Two glorious hours was wasted for about twenty people because of #100 bribe.
Finally, we moved. I could not utter a word because I was practically boiling in anger. I just kept asking myself some questions. How did we get here? How many years will it take for us to get back to our original honour and rank?
A country as giant as this must not go down the drain sake of the untold corruption eating up every parastatal. We must do something.

As if that wasn't enough, I alighted at the last bus stop to board a cab to my final destination while hoping to beat the heavy traffic that is looming during lunchtime. Just there, as I was waiting for the Uber I ordered, a mammoth crowd gathered behind me, though I was at a safe distance, a young fellow was dying in his pool of blood.

He was stabbed by a violent cult group operating in the area for wearing all black clothes.

This was when I got shivers all over me. A human being stabbed for wearing what he chooses to wear. That sounds weird but it happened.

The best bet is that there isn't freedom in Freetown. When you walk, always watch your back because dangerous things happens every time.

Sort:

Goodness, this is indeed a terribly state of affairs but it is not uncommon in Africa sadly, and probably exists hiding in the shadows in large swathes of the rest of the world too. The corruption and the needless violence have to end but can only do so when men and women of character take a stand for the better. Sometimes there is a need for both a political and cultural revolution to take place both within the minds and hearts of a people and externally through its institutions. Blessings are sent to you my friend and thank you for sharing a glimpse into what must be a tough daily grind in your beloved country🙏I cam to your post via @dreemport

For Nigeria to be better it lies in the hand of each and every one, because before those in power got there, Thier intention was already made so for them to change for better would be very hard

Well... Never stop publicising stuff like this. Truth is, what you wrote is an everyday experience of travellers in this country.

Even as I'm talking to you, I'm in a bus and the whole road is choked up. If you've been to Onitsha, you will understand how rowdy it can be. Even at that, for lack of words, I will just say that the driver is flying amidst this congested road. Passengers are screaming, but Oga no send them 😂😂

You talked about Police and cultism. That's a thingy in all part of nigeria. Methinks we have more problems than we can imagine.

My brother, it just baffles me how human life doesn't count again. Well, we will keep doing our best but some people must come to the realization why a nation like this has to be cleaned up.

Mehn...2 hours?

All black?

Terrible if you ask me.

I reminds of what I saw today in Anambra today that's as regards the madness of the country...

Some guys were burying a relative and decided to bath people in powder...random people they even beat up a guy for standing up to them...

I just hid in a panties shop where no man would expect another man to be hiding...

The last part sent chills through my spine. No democracy in a democratic world.
Living as slaves, in freedom.

And the Police? I don't even know if things will ever get better.
The hopelessness keeps looming.

I always get angry when I pass through a checkpoint and they ask for a bribe, and it is crazy how it has become a norm in our country.

Months after the END SARS movement and nothing has changed.

An average Nigerian suffers a lot of things and the system expects them to do so happily. These range from delay in boarding a bus, bad roads, intimidation from police, bandits and the rest.

Also, the Nigerian citizens too are not helping matter. After the End SARS protest, there were reduce checkpoints and reduced collection of bribes by police. Drivers/road users didn't give them money for such reason but now the situation have returned to status quo...

For the second case, I really hope that young fellow gets health care on time...

Pls,let's avoid circumstances that can cause harm to us or others. These days are not so good.
