International Women's Day
International Women's Day commemorates the struggle of women for their participation in society and their full development as a person, on an equal footing with men. Commemorated on March 8, and is a national holiday in some countries, it was institutionalized by the United Nations in 1975 as International Women's Day.
At the II International Conference of Socialist Women held in Copenhagen in 1910, Clara Zetkin proposed and approved the celebration of "Working Women's Day", which began to be celebrated the following year. The first commemoration was held on March 19 from 1911 in Germany, Austria, Denmark and Switzerland; since then it has spread to other countries and continents.
In 1972, the United Nations General Assembly, in its resolution 3010, declared 1975 the "International Year of Women", and in 1977 it invited States to declare, in accordance with their historical traditions and national customs, one day as International Day for Women's Rights and International Peace.
